About
I work with sound. I used to describe myself as a "composer,"
but that doesn't accurately represent what I do now. My
primary work is in podcasting - I produce a contemplative
podcast oriented towards sound and my experiences living
and working with it. I am also a college professor teaching
writing and music at Juniata College in Pennsylvania.
Burning the Thrushes Podcast
I came to Arteles with the intention of producing 2 new
episodes for my creative podcast, "Burning the Thrushes."
I ended up making 5. My time was spent writing scripts,
storyboarding episodes, creating original background music
(or, in some cases, foreground music), making and processing
field recordings, recording voiceovers, and assembling
everything in a DAW. Several of the new episodes were
unplanned and produced due to creative ideas stimulated
by Arteles and the surrounding natural beauty. The whole
process was incredibly organic, because the inspiration
for the podcast was my first trip to Arteles in 2017. The
opportunity for quiet contemplation, silence, introspection,
meditation, and communing with Finnish nature in the depths
of winter was all I needed to keep the creative juices flowing.
The podcast and the experience of being at Arteles (again)
are so closely linked that it's hard to tell where one ends and
the other begins.
