About
I’m interested in the stories people tell about themselves and
others, individually and in groups, fact or fiction. How do
our stories change as they migrate across media, language,
space? How do our identities change with these narratives?
I have an academic background in the study of foreign
languages, literatures and cultural history, and have come
to Arteles to see where the next stage of my journey will take
me and my stories.
Exploration
I came to Arteles to immerse myself in the materials for
two non-fiction projects, and to find time for solitude and
reflection — a break from my routines.
I spent many happy hours at my desk reading and taking
notes, allowing my imagination to wander over the landscapes
that emerged from my materials and, often, to inhabit the
beautiful view from my window over the lake and fields. I
also spent hours every day out of doors, exploring the local
area on foot and on one of the Arteles bicycles, watching
the colors of the landscape change as the autumn advanced
and listening to the swans as they gathered for migration.
Somewhere in all of this, I began to see how I could order
the narrative of events I was reconstructing, where to begin
writing.
Being able to return from these solitary adventures to the
community of fellow residents was a real privilege, especially
after the isolation of the past couple years. Getting to know
everyone, their work, their backgrounds, was inspiring, and
our conversations will stay with me in my writing and in daily
life. The supportive community was Arteles’ greatest gift,
and I’m grateful to have been able to share in it.
