Collaborative Services: Future Supplementary
Offerings of Travel Professionals?
How tour operators and travel agencies can adapt to the new
expectations of consumers
Precursor of carpooling via the internet, Blablacar is on
the crest of the new wave of online collaborative services.
Frédéric Mazzella, its founder and CEO explained that
such offers and this freedom of choice are a groundswell
trend, which the tourism stakeholders will have to seize.
He spoke to us about the genesis of his enterprise.
BlaBlaCar was born from a
personal need. In 2003, while I
had to get to the Vendée to spend
Christmas with my family, I
almost couldn’t make it, because
all the trains were full. Finally,
making the trip in the car with
my sister, I noted that many cars
were “empty”. I then realised that
the free seats for a trip at the last
moment were not in trains but in
individual cars. I then imagined
the possibilities of a carpool
synchronized via the internet and
mobile phone service. I said to
myself that if this service existed,
I would be the first user!
Were you surprised by your
own success?
I've always been convinced
by the virtues of carpooling
and increasing the supply of
mobility that he would offer. The
idea is simple but beneficial for
everyone! On the other hand, we
were surprised by the rapidity
of the growth of the concept,
which became a reflex in barely
a decade.
How can collaborative services
fit into the offer of a tour
operator or a travel agent?
Different collaborative services
that emerge - carpooling, car
rental between individuals,
housing or meals with locals -
are complementary and meet
a growing need by consumers.
DIFFERENT
COLLABORATIVE
SERVICES THAT
EMERGE (…) ARE
COMPLEMENTARY
AND MEET A
GROWING NEED BY
CONSUMERS.
Tourists, on their travels, will
not choose one offer or another
but will mix these different
possibilities. To meet the new
expectations of their customers,
tour operators and travel
agencies are going to have to
adapt and offer them also these
new services, partnering with
collaborative stakeholders.
:::: Fondateur et P-DG de BlaBlaCar
:::::::::: Les services collaboratifs,
vont devoir s’emparer. Il revient pour nous sur la
genèse de son entreprise.
BlaBlaCar est né d’un
besoin personnel. En 2003,
alors que je devais rejoindre
la Vendée pour passer Noël
en famille, j'ai bien failli ne
pas pouvoir m'y rendre car
tous les trains affichaient
complet. Finalement,
faisant le voyage en voiture
avec ma sœur, je me suis
rendu compte que beaucoup
de voitures étaient "vides".
J’ai alors réalisé que les
places libres pour un
voyage au dernier moment
ne se trouvaient pas dans
les trains mais dans les
voitures des particuliers.
J’ai alors imaginé toutes
les possibilités d'un service
de covoiturage synchronisé
via Internet et téléphones
mobiles. Je me suis dit
que si ce service existait,
j’en serais le premier
utilisateur !
Avez-vous été surpris par
votre propre succès ?
J’ai toujours été convaincu
par les vertus du covoiturage
et l’accroissement de l’offre
de mobilité qu’il allait
offrir. L’idée est simple mais
avantageuse pour tout le
monde !
En revanche, nous avons
été surpris par la rapidité
de l’essor du concept, qui
est devenu un réflexe en à
peine une dizaine d’années.
Comment les services
collaboratifs peuvent-ils
s’intégrer dans l’offre d’un
tour-opérateur ou d’un
agent de voyage ?
Les différents services
collaboratifs qui
émergent – covoiturage,
location de voiture entre
particuliers, logement
ou repas chez l’habitant
– sont complémentaires
et répondent à un besoin
de plus en plus vaste
des consommateurs. Les
touristes, lors de leurs
voyages, ne vont pas choisir
une offre ou une autre mais
vont mixer ces différentes
possibilités. Pour répondre
LES
DIFFÉRENTS
SERVICES
COLLABORATIFS
QUI ÉMERGENT
(…) SONT
COMPLÉMENTAIRES
ET RÉPONDENT À
UN BESOIN DE PLUS
EN PLUS VASTE DES
CONSOMMATEURS.
aux nouvelles attentes
de leurs clients, les touropérateurs
et les agences
de voyages vont devoir
s’adapter et proposer eux
aussi ces nouveaux services
en s’associant avec les
acteurs collaboratifs.
