LUXEMBOURG:
BUILDING A
«LAND OF
OPPORTUNITIES»
IN THE DATA-
DRIVEN ECONOMY
BY ALEXANDRE KEILMANN
In today’s hyper connected society and
with the exponential growth of the Digital
Universe, the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg
wishes to seize the multiple opportunities
of the newly created data-driven economy.
Earlier this month, Jean-Marie Spaus shared
with the audience of IS Days the strategy of
the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg in terms of
HPC – High Performance Computing – and Big
Data, in order to prepare the country for such
an economy. The tech and digital-savvy team
of BEAST keeps a close eye on this innovative
and future-oriented data strategy.
In such a digital and connected context, the
government’s main objectives and challenges
are the creation of commercial opportunities
by deriving economic value from digital data,
the necessity to install a vital and GDPR
compliant data-driven ecosystem and finally,
the reconciliation of data protection in such an
economy. After more than 20 years at Entreprise
des Postes et Télécommunications (EPT) – which
later became POST Luxembourg – and notably
as Director from 2013 to 2016, Jean-Marie Spaus
joined the Luxembourg Ministry of Economy
to coordinate the country’s High Performance
Computing (HPC) and Big Data activities. In
his role as Luxembourg’s HPC coordinator, Mr.
Spaus is actively involved in the definition and
implementation process of Europe’s HPC, Cloud
Computing and Big Data Strategy.
