OF JADE

The green semiprecious stone
that symbolizes tranquillity
and wisdom is the hallmark
of the elegant necklaces
Yu, which means “the most beautiful
stone”, is the Chinese name for jade,
the stone that more than any other is
associated with the civilization of the Far
East, its rituals, its mysteries and its
traditions. The ancients attributed great
healing properties to this stone and used it to
instil courage, wisdom, justice and
compassion in the wearer. According to
Confucius it possessed 11 virtues, including
benevolence, since it is gentle and shining,
loyalty because it never irritates the skin, and
sincerity because a defect in jade is never
hidden.
On the other side of the world, in Pre-
Columbian America, jade was considered a
talisman by the Maya, Olmecs and Toltecs.
But Cortes and his conquistadores
introduced it in Europe.
This green semiprecious stone is the
hallmark of the latest jewellery collection
designed by Grazia Vozza. Large jade
medallions in a gold claw setting are the focal
point of many creations. These elegant,
sculptured gems are held in place by strings
of turquoise and coral whose contrasting
shapes and colours enliven necklaces and
bracelets alike. They are all eye-catching
creations that make a strong impact. More
romantic are the basket pendants made of
interwoven gold wire, enclosing a flowered
vase carved in jade holding a red rose.
The new line of jewellery is accompanied by
the “I passi” bags in new shapes and colours.
This year they are all shoulder-bags whose
handles are strings of amber, turquoise,
ebony and coral, which can be transformed
into magnificent necklaces with a wave of
the hand. ■
