The results of the discussion are reported below. This report is mainly based on information provided by
mr. Caby, added with notes from the discussion (in italic).
1. Experience about single seal joints
See table on next pages.
2. Design
Are traffic loads and movements from standards and measurements used for design calculations and
verification tests? When tests are carried out, which boundary conditions are used and do they include
the most adverse design situations? What design life is aimed at? Are the structures tested and
evaluated with respect to the brittleness and the risk of crack propagation
Traffic loads and movements are taken from Belgium standards NBN B 03-101 (1993) and from the
"catalogue évolutif des joints contrôlés". This last document takes in to account the life time of the
joint by introducing the factors K trafic depending on the traffic importance and the K dénivellation
depending on the fact that the joint is or is not replaceable. (See Mr J. S. Leendertz document of the
04-05-2000 on that matter).
Traffic loads translated in axle-load spectra vary by motorway, depending on the part freight
traffic. The heaviest traffic is concentrated around Antwerp.
The design is only done according to the results of calculations based on an elastic limit state criterion.
No tests are carried out because the cost is to important for the Belgium market.
Mr. Massard has a complete design calculation of a multi-seal expansion joint. Parts of this
calculation are applicable to single seal joints. Difficult aspects of the calculation are the
assumptions for the wheel pressure on the steel nosing. Rijkswaterstaat (mr. Leendertz) has
comparable calculations.
Remark : The coefficients K trafic and K dénivellation have been calibrated on the base of our
experience and good behaviour of joints known at that time.
