Is there a tendency to avoid joints in bridge structures?
These last 30 years, there is a tendency to avoid a maximum of expansion joints in road bridges and to
use bonding supple concrete slabs. These slabs are 10 cm thick, 80 cm long and very heavily reinforced
(10 ∅ 16 mm top and bottom) (see figure). This applies to joints between bridge deck elements or
bridge deck and abutment. All displacements are concentrated in joints between bridge deck elements
or bridge deck and abutments.
3. Manufacturing and installation
How is dealt with the manufacturing an installation procedures and quality control aspects? Do
internal or external institutions carry out manufacturing and installation inspections?
The quality control at the factory is carried out by the D 422 – "Direction des structures métalliques" of
the MET – "Ministère Wallon de l'Équipement et des Transports". In certain cases and mainly when in
a foreign country this department of the MET can delegate the control to an approved private firm.
