Appendix Questionnaire CONCEPT 26/5/2003 Dear Sir, I assume you are familiar with the fact that Rijkswaterstaat as a government organisation in The Netherlands is the owner of the motorways, canals, rivers and storm barriers. A survey of maintenance costs showed that after resurfacing projects, the maintenance and replacement of single seal joints is the major origin of expenses for motorways. Therefore Rijkswaterstaat has initiated an internal quality improvement project for single seal joints which consists of the following phases: 1. Survey and analysis of problems 2. Discussion with nabouring countries about their experiences 3. Proposals for better design, fabrication, installation etc. laid down in specifications 4. Proposals for maintenance For phase 2 we would like to discuss with the Ministry of Transport in Flanders and Wallony and the BASt in Germany the following subjects: 1. Types of single seal joints If used, what are the experiences with: • Epoxy nosings with bonded seals • Steel nosings anchored in epoxy • Steel nosings anchored in concrete • Steel nosings in polymeric concrete • Bituminous joints • Flexible plug joints • Buried joints • Finger joints • Mat joints Are types excluded? 2. Design Are traffic loads and movements from standards and measurements used for design calculations and verification tests? When tests are carried out, which boundary conditions are used and do they include the most adverse design situations? What design life is aimed at? Are the structures tested and evaluated with respect to the brittleness and the risk of crack propagation Is there a tendency to avoid joints in bridge structures? 70 Rapportage inventarisatie enkelvoudige voegen
3. Manufacturing and Installation How is dealt with the manufacturing an installation procedures and quality control aspects? Do internal or external institutions carry out manufacturing and installation inspections? 4. Inspection and Maintenance Who is carrying out inspections and the evaluation of the results? Is maintenance subject to standard procedures and how is dealt with traffic measures (lane closures etc.)? What type related damages are found? Do specific materials and construction types show specific damages? 5. Replacement How is dealt with replacement? Are the working lives of the joint types evaluated, also in relation to the traffic distribution, volume, environmental conditions, de-icing agents etc.?
