4. Inspection and maintenance
Who is carrying out inspections and the evaluation of the results?
Is maintenance subject to standard procedures and how is dealt with traffic measures (lane
closures etc.)? What type related damages are found?
Do specific materials and construction types show specific damages?
All bridges in Flanders have to be inspected every 3 years (general inspection ‘A(algemene)
inspectie’). Simple bridges, box type underpasses and such are inspected every 6 years.
Inspections are carried out by own personnel.
Inspection reports consist of a list all elements with damages, drawn up by the inspector. The
bridge engineer draws up a report (‘inspectieverslag’) based on the inspection reports. This
report is send to the Brussels’ office, where it is checked by the structural engineer (‘stabiliteits
ingenieur’) on possible structural problems. If necessary special inspections (B(ijzondere)
inspectie’) are planned.
Planning procedures were not discussed.
Specific experience is reported in table in section 1.
5. Replacement
How is dealt with replacement? Are the working lives of the joint types evaluated, also in relation to
the traffic distribution, volume, environmental conditions, de-icing agents etc.?
Replacement of joints has a major impact on traffic. Therefore a long lifetime of joints is
required. The frequently used joint type in Flanders, steel nosing anchored in concrete, has a
lifetime of 20 to 40 years. Bituminous joints and epoxy types are not allowed in new designs
because of their short lifetimes.
