The control on site is carried out by the department in charge of the bridge ("la Direction Territoriale").
No standard requirements are yet compulsory. Requirements as given by Rijkswaterstaat NBD-
00710 on QA an QC are regarded as useful. Installation must be part of the quality plan of the
contractor and shall be approved by the manufacturer.
4. Inspection and maintenance
Who is carrying out inspections and the evaluation of the results?
Is maintenance subject to standard procedures and how is dealt with traffic measures (lane closures
etc.)? What type related damages are found?
Do specific materials and construction types show specific damages?
Since 1978, a systematic inspection of all our bridges is organised. The procedure is laid down under
the code "règlement de gestion des ouvrages d'art pour la région wallonne". That code specifies that
all bridges have to be inspected at least every 3 years.
The inspection is carried out by a staff member of the department in charge of the bridge ("la Direction
Territoriale"). He is usually not an civil engineer. He writes the "formulaire d'inspection".
The evaluation and results are written by a civil engineer of the department in charge of the bridge ("la
Direction Territoriale") and is called "le rapport d'inspection" This report is sent with the formulaire
d'inspection" to the D 411 – "Direction des Ponts et Charpentes" who gives it's advice.
We have no records about the relation between type of damage found, and the type of joints, the type
of structure or the builder. A few ideas have been given on that matter in the table in point 1.
5. Replacement
How is dealt with replacement? Are the working lives of the joint types evaluated, also in relation to the
traffic distribution, volume, environmental conditions, de-icing agents etc.?
The replacement of a joint only depends on the damages observed at the inspection time and on the
evaluation of the state of the joint. With the advice of the different departments of the ministry
involved in the matter, the department in charge of the bridge ("la Direction Territoriale") will decide to
repair or to replace the entire joint or parts of it.
