Pheterson beschrijft hoe ongenuanceerd maatschappelijke taboes over prostitutie zijn. Ook in
de wetenschap zijn er vooroordelen over prostitutie. ‘Social science research is infected with
prejudices against prostitute-branded women. Even the category “prostitute” is based upon
symbolic and legal representations of the bad woman or whore than upon an actual set of
characteristics within a population of persons.’ 80 Eén van de misverstanden die ze de wereld
uit wil helpen is dat prostituees met iedereen seks hebben, terwijl ze klanten kunnen weigeren
die hun niet aanstaan.
Je kunt je afvragen hoe anders prostituees nu werkelijk zijn dan niet-prostituees. Volgens
Pheterson is er binnen het huwelijk sprake van een impliciete uitwisseling van seks tegen
geld, goederen en veiligheid. ‘“Why are we rejected for selling our sexual value when other
women do it all the time in one way or another?” asked a Dutch whore.’ 81 Zij doet
wetenschappelijk onderzoek om de kloof te versmallen en organiseert ontmoetingen tussen
prostituees en niet-prostituees. ‘There are many reasons for exposing the reality of
prostitution. Nonprostitute women are socialized not to possess sexual information or skill,
not to talk about sex, not to ask for money in any situation, and not to associate with whores.
A sharing of prostitute financial and sexual practices with nonprostitute women challenges
that socialization, challenges the divisions it imposes upon women, and challenges the
normative assumption of female sexual and financial dependency.’ 82 Prostituees leggen door
hun bestaan, waarin ze open zijn over hun ruil van seks tegen geld, taboes bloot die de
samenleving oplegt over seksualiteit en man-vrouw verhoudingen. Wanneer ze buiten de
maatschappij worden geplaatst, kan de situatie blijven zoals hij is. In deze tijd is men opener
over seks en zijn vrouwen actiever op seksueel gebied. Ik vraag me af of prostituees meer
geaccepteerd worden dan zestien jaar geleden, toen Pheterson haar artikel schreef.
Sommige prostituees kijken neer op vrouwen die uit angst bij hun man blijven en seks met
hem hebben. ‘Some prostitutes reserve the word prostitute for professional sex work which
they consider honorable and delegate the word whore to self-compromising sexual
accommodation which they consider dishonourable. One prostitute said, “Women who have
