am wasting my time up here, with my
21 years. It is not that life up here does
not interest me, but because I miss
being with other people. Trylle
(Troelsen), Vibe and I certainly know
each other by now and although I get
on very well with them both, I have the
feeling that I am standing still. This is
the first time in my life that I have felt
lonely. For the first time I have a desperate
longing to be amidst other people.
Perhaps I have been cured of my reclusive
tendencies.
There are definitely a lot of things I
need to get done – my relationship to
Trine is unresolved – God knows if she
ever gets my letter – and having so
much spare time to think about it does
not help either. And I have not finished
my education. It is easy enough to say
that my work here is providing me with
a foundation for my future, but I am

idle during the winter months anyway,
because I do not have enough magnesium
for lengthy reports. I long to be
able to say what I want to another person.
We are all three very reserved, but
perhaps the winter darkness will do the
rest. It is possible that I myself will say
the words of release at some point, for
something must be done. Ordinary
companionship is no longer enough.«
However, the depression was shortlived.
Soon, everybody took up their
work with renewed energy. Troelsen
equipped his geological expedition and
subsequently achieved fine results. As
many people know, Vibe went to
Godthåb where, as editor of the newly
established newspaper »Grønlandsposten«
and through his work for
Greenland’s Radio he made a valuable
contribution to everyone in Greenland
and to the provisional government,
which Finn Lynge called the »rehearsal«
for Home Rule.
Manne went on working with his
cameras and made a new title page in
his journal: The Danish Zoo-photographic
Expedition. Under extremely difficult
conditions and often risking his
life, he filmed polar bears, seals and
walrus. He spared no pains to get the
best possible results. And like his father,
he always played down his »heroics«
when he wrote about the events in his
journal.
Manne passed his test with flying
colours. van Hauen’s expedition had
given him his first opportunity to do
independent artistic work. The journey
of a lifetime made it possible for him to
celebrate great triumphs as an acclaimed
TV photographer in the USA.
