video »Red Lights« has already been
shown on foreign TV channels. Angu
Motzfeldt and Simon Lynge, who has
given concerts all over the world, are
considered the frontrunners of a new
generation of musicians who are taking
on the world. One man who really believes
it can happen is manager Ejvind
Elsner, owner of Atlantic Music, which
has its sights on the international possibilities.
He has invested a considerable
sum in Angu Motzfeldt’s musical career.
At the release party for Angu’s English
language CD in December last year
Ejvind Elsner had a simple message:
- Greenlandic musicians are honest
and they possess a personality that is
unique.
More up-coming stars
Another bright talent is the 20-year old
Tupaarnaq Mathæussen, who made
her debut with the album »Illit« and
who is an obvious choice for interna-

tional promotion. Angu Motzfeldt
participated in the recording of her CD
– and suddenly he attracted all the
attention.
- Angu stood there with his songs in
English, so it was natural to start recording
his songs first, tells producer and
recording technician Mik Christensen of
Atlantic Studio, thereby voicing the allimportant
premise for international
success: the audience must understand
the lyrics.
This did not mean that Tupaarnaq
Mathæussen’s career was put on standby
– quite the opposite. 14 days after
Angu Motzfeldt’s record was in the
stores, she came out with her »Illit« (You).
- She will be the next star to go out
into the world. Her voice has a wide
spectrum so she has a chance of going
far. However, the lyrics need to be in a
language that can be understood outside
Greenland. This is why her next
release, which is expected to come out
in April, will be in English, says Ejvind
Elsner. He does not blink for a second
as he characterizes Tupaarnaq’s talent
and personality:
- If there was a Greenlandic word
for diva, it would be Tupaarnaq.
Julie and the effect
Another part of the current music
scene is the story of the Greenlandic
singer Julie Berthelsen, who released
the CD »Home« last year, after she
won second place in the Danish TV
show »Popstars« – a concept which is
also found in a series of other countries.
Her record was a great success,
both in Greenland and in Denmark. As
musical ice-breaker she has helped to
bring the Greenland music scene into
focus and given new nourishment to
hopeful dreams. Although Julie Berthelsen
was already well known in
Greenland, her TV performance proved
that practice makes perfect. To such an
extent that national Danish TV station
made her Female Artist of the Year 2003.
Few people can expect to get this
kind of exposure, but faith and hard
