ABSTRACT
Glanders is an infectious disease caused by a Gram-negative bacillus known as
Burkholderia mallei that primarily is responsible for disease in equids and
occasionally humans. In 2010 was diagnosed the first case of glanders in Distrito
Federal (DF), in this context, the objective of this study was to estimate the
prevalence of glanders in traction equids properties, in order to identify potential
risk factors and epidemiology. Three hundred and fifty owners were randomly
sampled and all equids from each random owner were sampled, totalizing 496
animals. It was applied an epidemiological questionnaire to analyze possible risk
factors associated with the disease. The diagnostic was based in a screening with
complement fixation test (CFT) and the positive animals were submitted to two
consecutives mallein tests with the interval of 45 days. None of the animals was
glanders positive and was observed that, if the disease exists in DF, there is a
probability of 95% that the prevalence is lower than 0,85%. In conclusion, although
glanders prevalence is very low in DF, the official service should maintain an
active vigilance, mainly, because of the survey population are not submitted to
periodic tests and because of the frequent commercialization of these animals.
Moreover, we suggest the use of more efficient diagnostic tests, with easy
execution and less subjective in order to prevent unnecessary restrictions to
equids transit. Additionally, was verified that the CFT usually results false-positive
in mules samples and the programs of sanitary education should be intensified
and directed to the population that works with equids.
