ABSTRACT
The Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is a disease that has a world-wide distribution
and it is caused by a lentivirus. This disease hampers the development of horse
breeding in Brasil, mainly, because of the obligation to eliminate the test positive
animals. In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence
of EIA in traction equids, in order to identify potential risk factors and
epidemiology, analyzing the situation of this disease in Distrito Federal (DF). Three
hundred and fifty (350) owners were randomly sampled and all equids from each
random owner were sampled, totalizing 496 animals. The samples were analyzed
in LANAGRO/MG using the agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) and, in the same
time of the blood collect, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire to
analyze possible risk factors associated with the disease. The prevalence was
estimated at 2.29% confidence interval (CI) 95% = [1.01% - 4.2%] for owners
testing positive and 1.81% confidence interval (CI) 95% = [0.55% - 3.07%] for
horses. None risk factor was associated to the disease. This study demonstrated
that the prevalence of EIA in traction equids from DF is low, which justifies the
elimination of test positive animals, in order to promote the eradication of this
disease, improving the importance of submission of this animals to periodic tests
by SEAPA/DF.
