ABSTRACT
The painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985) developed a unique style, creating a magical
world, replete of beings who exercise a real fascination on the human imaginary,
mixing traditional elements of the Russian-Jewish culture with the influences of the
artistics avant-gardes of the twentieth century. This paper discusses the various
points of connection between the work of this artist and the theater in order to
develop the construction elements of the dramaturgical text Sobre a Aldeia. At first,
this paper seeks such information through the study of aspects of Chagall's
biography, which I highlight the strong influence of theater on his work, and his
experiences as a set designer. Secondly, from a discussion of the concept of
theatricality, I analyze how this concept manifests itself in some works by the artist.
The analysis of the theatricality of Chagall is a key step in my methodological
process of dramaturgical creation; it is from her that I discuss the relation between
the language of painting and the language of theater. To do so, I articulate the
concept of theatricality with bachelardians notions about the creative imagination in
order to design the screen space as a stage. Only after the analysis of the historical
aspects that link the work of Chagall to the art of the theater and how this art is
manifested in his works, in possession of material elements and imaginative enough
to create my dramaturgical text, I present Sobre a Aldeia.
Key-words: Marc Chagall, theatricality, dramaturgy, art's history.
