L: Há alguma ligação entre o Toyota e o Aston Martin?
MT: Ambos de janeiro de 1971 e a improbabilidade de poderem
ter matrículas seguidas. Adquiri o Aston Martin em 2004 a
um senhor inglês. Ao legalizá-lo, solicitei ao CPAA certificado
comprovativo do seu interesse histórico e à DGV matrícula
da época. Inacreditavelmente a matrícula atribuída foi do
algarismo anterior à do Toyota.
L: Is there any connection between the Toyota and the Aston Martin?
MT: Both are from January 1971 and the incredible fact that they have
consecutive registration plates. I bought the Aston Martin in 2004 from
an English owner. When I registered it in Portugal I asked the CPAA
for a certificate attesting that the vehicle had historic value and the
original registration plate from DGV. The registration plate awarded was,
incredibly, the number before that of the Toyota.

Lí: O outro carro que destacou foi o Corvette. Porquê?
MT: Este Corvette de 1960 é um ícone da indústria automóvel
americana. Adquiri-o em França, confiando nas fotos enviadas
e aparentemente por um bom preço. Quando o recebi a deceção
foi grande porque nem motor V8 nem caixa de velocidades
eram originais. Fez-se um restauro completo de A a Z, com peças
originais e ficou novo, “de novo”. Mais de dois anos demorou o
seu restauro.
L: Na sua opinião qual é o panorama nacional no que se refere
a carros clássicos?
MT: Cada vez mais se sente o prazer pelos clássicos, surgindo
todos os anos novos entusiastas e inúmeros passeios de
clássicos em todo o país. Tornou-se também numa forma de nos
socializarmos com novas pessoas, visitarmos interessantes locais
históricos e de nos degustarmos em restaurantes desconhecidos.
Pena a atual legislação automóvel penalizar severamente a
importação dos modelos a partir de 1970, tratando-os como se
fossem novos, quando na maioria dos casos estes fazem,
se fizerem, poucas centenas de quilómetros por ano.
L: You also mentioned the Corvette. Why?
MT: The 1960 Corvette is an icon of the American car industry.
I bought it in France, relying on the pictures sent and apparently for
a good price. When it arrived, I was disappointed. The gearbox and the
V8 engine were not the original. I restored the car from A to Z with
original parts and it was new again. It took two years.
L: What is your opinion about the domestic scene of classic cars?
MT: Increasing pleasure is taken in classic cars and every year new
enthusiasts and several classical car tours turn up countrywide. It has
also become a way for us to socialize with new people, to visit interesting
historical sites and try out unfamiliar restaurants. It is a pity that the
current car legislation has severely penalized the import of models from
1970 onwards, treating them as if they were new, when in most cases they
only cover a couple of hundred miles a year at the most.
