Uma viagem pelo estilo retórico
de dois líderes. serão mesmo
tão diferentes?
Ingrediente tradicional da formação de um líder, a “arte de
falar bem” (ars bene dicendi: definição clássica da retórica) inclui
competências não apenas de ordem lógico-linguística
(a capacidade de argumentar, a habilidade dialética de
responder às objeções, etc.), mas também performativas e
emocionais (a capacidade de despertar as emoções do auditório).
Sobretudo em contextos democráticos, a persuasão retórica tem
sido considerada fundamental e os grandes líderes políticos
da História têm sido caracterizados por uma oratória capaz de
juntar, ao mesmo tempo, credibilidade e pedagogia. Fundamental
seria, neste caso, a capacidade de construir um discurso cuja
forma e cujo conteúdo tenha a capacidade de influenciar
as opiniões e as ações dos ouvintes. Por isso, o cómico grego
Eupólide dizia que a eloquência de Péricles, o líder da cidade
de Atenas do século V, deixava um “ferrão” nas orelhas dos
que o ouviam.

Are they really that different?
“The art of speaking well” (arsbene dicendi: classic definition of rhetoric)
is an essential leadership ingredient. It includes skills that are not
exclusively logical-linguistic (the capacity to argue, dialectic skills to
respond to objections, etc), but performing and emotional as well (the
capacity to awaken the emotions of the audience). Rhetorical persuasion
has been considered fundamental especially in democratic contexts and
the great leaders in History have been characterised by speeches capable
of bringing together credibility and pedagogy at the same time. The
capacity to prepare a speech whose form and content has the ability to
influence the opinions and actions of listeners is fundamental, in this
case. That is why the Greek poet of Old Comedy Eupolis said that the
eloquence of Pericles, the leader of the city of Athens during the 5th
century, “stung” the ears of those who listened to him.
