C24. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) IN CARDIAC
TUMORS
Ioana Smarandita Lacau, MD, PhD, EdiR
Bucuresti
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important tool in the evaluation of
cardiac neoplasms. Using different type of sequences: T1-weighted, T2weighted,
and gadolinium-enhanced T1, it is possible to define anatomic
boundaries and tissue characterization, whereas cine gradient-echo imaging
is used to assess functional effects. Although there is some overlap in the
MRI appearances of cardiac tumors, particularly of primary malignancies,
differences in characteristic locations and features should allow confident
differentiation between benign and malignant tumors. MRI offers improved
resolution, a larger field of view, and superior soft-tissue contrast compared
with those of echocardiography, suggesting that knowledge of the MRI
features of cardiac neoplasms is important for accurate diagnosis and
management. The multiplanar assessment of the anatomy, tissue
characteristics, and functional impact of a cardiac or juxtacardiac mass
afforded by cardiac MRI should allow early differentiation between benign
and malignant tumors. This will enable rapid aggressive treatment of benign
processes via surgical resection, thus avoiding the morbidity associated with
late complications. This contrasts to the information yielded by MRI of
malignant tumors, the complete diagnosis of which should frequently lead to
a more measured approach, appropriate in the majority of cases to the
context of palliative treatment.
