The museum is located in the buil<strong>din</strong>g known in the interwar period under the name of "TheQueen's Nest" or "Royal Pavilion". În secolul al XIVlea,peste aceste ruine s-a instalat oașezare românească de bordeie. Aufost dezvelite zidurile de apărare, cuopt turnuri, ale orașului roman târziuSucidava (secolele IV - VI), care,împreună cu satul actual, acoperă oparte a orașului roman <strong>din</strong> secolele II -III, mai puțin cunoscută; băi romane, obasilica paleocreștină (secolele V - VI), străzi pavate, o fântâna subterană secretă construită de romani;baza piciorului podului construit peste Dunăre în timpul lui Constantin cel Mare etc.The settlement became an important Roman military, economic <strong>and</strong> port centre. Between 306 <strong>and</strong> 337the fortified settlement, destroyed by the Huns, was restored <strong>and</strong> turned into a military base wherebarracks, stables, a bridge over the Danube <strong>and</strong> a fort were built. During the 14th century, over theseruins a <strong>Romania</strong>n half-sunken dwelling settlement emerged. We uncovered the defence walls, with eighttowers, of the late Roman city of Sucidava (the 4th - 6th centuries), that, together with the currentvillage, covers a less known part of the Roman city from the 2nd - 3rd centuries; Roman baths, a paleo-Christian basilica (the 5th - 6th centuries), paved streets, a secret underground well built by the Romansthat has been preserved; the base of the bridge foot built across the Danube during Constantine theGreat, etc.159
