Diagnosis is the most difficult process of the
disease
Ozan Karacalı, President of the Association to Fight
PNH and aHUS, and a patient with PNH, “I applied to the
doctor with fever in the morning and excessive sweating,
especially in the head and neck region, in the processes that
started with extreme fatigue and progressed. The most
difficult process of the disease was the diagnosis section
for me. Since my liver values were also very high, it was first
considered as a cancer developing in the liver. Later, when
it was understood that I did not have cancer, some tests
were performed. Eventually, my disease could be diagnosed
with tests and biopsies. When the diagnosis was made in
2008, no solution was possible other than a bone marrow
transplant. In the attack periods, it was tried to overcome
the attack with only cortisone treatment. With the use of
new technologies developed in the course of time, the
devastating effects of the disease could be prevented to a
great extent by preventing attacks instead of suppressing
them. In this way, the body was able to become more
resilient and strong. Many of my health values have now
reached the levels they should be normal today.”
It is important for the close circle to empathize
with the sick individuals
Declaring that we expect an approach that will provide
empathy for the patient by understanding what the disease
is from our close circle, Ozan Karacalı, President of the
Association to Fight PNH and aHUS added, “We can ask our
close circle to support us in difficult moments or knowing
the expectations of the patient when he needs it. The most
important expectation of support from the society is the
support of these patients in matters that will make their
lives easier. For example; Just as our patients who have to
take leave from the workplace once every two weeks are
not inconvenienced… There is also a positive discrimination
expectation from the health authorities for the sick
individuals. A positive discrimination, together with patients
with other rare diseases, on issues such as improving the
conditions of patients who are treated in the hospital once
every two weeks, access to treatment and applicability
of treatment throughout their life, will make the lives of
patients much easier. In addition, our patients, who live
with all kinds of difficulties, always deserve to reach the
latest technological developments in the treatment of PNH
and aHUS as quickly as possible.”
Ozan Karacalı, who shares his suggestions with individuals
who are struggling with the same disease or who have
just met, said, “Patients should strive to reach all kinds
of accurate information they can get about the disease,
primarily from their doctors. They should contact people
who are being treated for the same disease and prepare
themselves for the situations they may encounter during
the disease process. It should not be forgotten that no one
knows an event better than the person who experienced
it. My other suggestion is that they should try to know
their own body by knowing their diseases very well. They
should experience the pre-attack symptoms, what they can
experience during and after the attack, and take their own
precautions.”
yerinden izin almak zorunda kalan hastalarımıza zorluk
ulaşmayı her zaman hak ediyorlar.”
