younger generations attending mass in Figtree on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter if they don’t understand Slovenian, I don’t understand everything. It’s being together with other people of the same heritage and celebrating God’s love for us all. For several years now I have been setting the altar for mass and cleaning away after mass. From January this year I have also been mowing the lawns. It would be great to have some other young people helping out. Now in 2008 we celebrated World Youth Day (WYD2008) in Sydney with His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. Approximately 120 young pilgrims from Slovenia travelled to Australia for WYD2008. Twenty of these pilgrims were allocated to stay with us in Figtree for one week leading up to WYD2008. Somehow, I ended up with the job of being the Pilgrim Coordinator for Figtree Slovenian Church and worked in conjunction with the Days in the Diocese program for Wollongong Diocese. My job included arranging accommodation, transport, some meals, a mix of a spiritual program and some local sightseeing as well as raising money to fund the meals and transport. Thankfully, the majority of our Slovenian community was very supportive, some by offering their homes for accommodation; others offered donations of money and help. Special thanks to Ema Mailow, Barica Brodnik, Angela Sirc and Olga Žičkar for all their help in the kitchen and many thanks to all who helped in so many ways. Yes, it was lots of work organising everything but it was all worth while as we all had a fantastic week. The pilgrims enjoyed their stay and we all made new friends. During the week we celebrated mass every day. We visited the Benedictine nuns at Jamberoo Abbey where Sr. Hilda amazingly had the right words to say to each of us and touched our hearts, then we had lunch on Kiama harbour. Another day we celebrated mass at Penrose Park Monastery where we walked in the Australian bush and looked through all the international chapels including our own 134
Slovenian chapel. We ended the week with a special mass on 13 July celebrated by Bishop Peter Štumpf from Slovenia. The Slovenian Pilgrims that visited Wollongong before WYD2008 were: p. Iztok Mozetič, Rok Hočevar, Marta Jagodic, Klemen Kebe, Katarina Korenčan, Nataša Ličen, Mojca Resnik, Irena Verbič, Rok Hrast, Andrej Kramar, Urška Rutar, Nina Vidmar, Nika Zdjelar, Maja Marijana Zorc, Darja Bečan, Alenka Bajd, Katja Brvar, Mateja Verbuč and Lucija Lapuh. Thanks to the generous donations from our Slovenian community in Figtree to feed and transport our Slovenian pilgrims for WYD2008. There was some money left over from our pilgrim’s visit which was spent on a new gold plated Chalice, Ciborium and 2 altar candle stands for our church, especially in time for our church’s 25th anniversary. The new Chalice, Ciborium and altar candle stands will be blessed for the 25th Anniversary of the All Saints Slovenian Catholic Church Figtree.
