Once the sale of the property was finalised, the renovations and
hard work began. The artist Cveto Mejač donated three beautiful
paintings for All Saints Church; The Last Supper, St Francis of
Assisi and the icon of Mary Mother of God. I remember the
ordering of the crown from Slovenia, and bringing it back with
me, along with the cross which was made from clay by a
Carthusian priest in Pleterje.
I knew the road from Merrylands to Figtree as accurately as an
aviation route. I could pinpoint every kilometre and I knew
exactly what time I would arrive at All Saints Church.
We celebrated mass every second and fourth Sunday in the
month. In Advent, Lent and during the months of May and
October we also had mass every Wednesday. There was also
mass for Easter and Christmas. On Easter Sunday, I would
celebrate my first mass in Merrylands, then Figtree at midday
and Canberra in the evening. And every Christmas Eve there was
the unforgettable journey to Figtree where we celebrated
Midnight Mass.
The participation of the congregation was always impeccable.
The choirmaster Barica Brodnik (I called her my Australian
mother) always found young organists who practised with the
young group of singers before and after mass. Sakristans John
Konrad and Ciril Škofic diligently attended to their duties.
All of you who have taken on the duties of the upkeep of the
church and Club’s premises for the last 25 years deserve praise.
You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
