The First Anglican Church in Figtree
The most prominent layman, Mr Thomas Chapman, a locomotive
driver with one leg, was known as ‘the Verger’ because the
Figtree Church was his life. He was the chairman of the building
committee.
The foundation stone was laid by Margaret Jessie Lee on 13 May
1911. On 14 November 1911, the Church was opened and
dedicated by Archdeacon Gunter, assisted by the Rev. Lampard.
Mrs Lee was one of the main organisers of all the work that was
done in the parish of All Saints in Figtree.
Royalty in Figtree
In 1947, the Duke of Gloucester, the Governor-General of
Australia, the Duchess, and their Royal Highnesses William and
Richard, stayed at ‘Greenhill’ on the hill above the Church and
became part of the congregation.
The Kembla Parish Messenger reported on the event: The
Church was always well filled when the Royal party were
present, but those who have been at all intimate with them, have
led us to the conclusion they are both devoted to their Church
and worship because they love to worship rather than because
they must do so. 4
Slovenci v Wollongongu
