Father Tomaž Menart arrived in Sydney in March 1994 to
carry on with pastoral work and help Father Valerijan at St.
Raphael’s Slovenian Mission in Merrylands. He was also a
frequent visitor to Wollongong. From the beginning he was a
little shy, but later when he made friends with the local
Slovenians he joined them in a game of pool in the church hall.
At that time sister Francka Žižek was in Merrylands, filling all
sorts of jobs from being the choirmaster to cook and anything
else that needed attention. She was also the designated driver
and choirmaster of our church choir. While the singers were
rehearsing in the church, the men played pool in the hall. Father
Tomaž always enjoyed a game of pool.
In December 1995 while setting the crib for Christmas at St
Raphael’s Slovenian church, Father Tomaž had a nasty fall and
broke his leg. Recovery of his injury was very slow. By the month
of June 1996 he had not fully recovered. He decided that it was
best for him to return to Slovenia.
For the next two years Father Valerijan was on his own again.
Pater Metod Ogorevec
Pater Metod Ogorevec je prišel v Sydney, da bi pomagal patru
Valerijanu februarja, 1997. Tudi v Wollongngu smo ga srečali,
pa nas je kar hitro zapustil. Po nenadni in prehitri smrti patra
Bazilija v Melbournu, je prevzel vodstvo Svetega Cirila in
Medoda v Kew. Tako je pater Valerijan zopet ostal sam za vsa
dela.
Father Metod Ogorevec arrived at St Raphael’s Slovenian
Mission in Merrylands in February 1997 to replace Fr. Tomaž
Menart. His stay in Merrylands was very brief. Father Bazilij
Valentin died suddenly and Fr. Metod had to take over the Sts.
Cyril and Methodius Slovenian Mission in Melbourne.
