THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL FRAMEWORKOF LIFELONG LEARNING FOR SUSTAINABLEDEVELOPMENTVinka UzelacUniversity of Rijeka, Faculty of Teacher Education in RijekaRepublika HrvatskaAbstractThe aim of this work is to point at the need of more active involvement of educationalinstitutions into the process of lifelong learning for sustainable development. For this purpose,the attention is called to major challenges and problems at the international level with whichboth the world and Croatian educational theory and practice are being faced. In this work, theapproach to the analysis of education for sustainable development refers to the investigationof the basic characteristics of global questions and problems of this kind of education. Thesequestions are of great importance because they belong to the efforts connected with theirapplication in practice, that is, educational system which is our case. On the other hand, thereference to the accessible documents, papers and/or studies is important because they warnabout some disadvantages of education for sustainable development. This particularly refersto the description of certain examples of redefining education for sustainable developmentwhich is the consequence of different views about the values, aims, contents, activities andother circumstances in which an activity takes place. At the same time, this also refers to somedilemmas that have not been sufficiently actualized to date. In this work, the attention is alsogiven to teacher education for sustainable development as a topical interdisciplinary issue thathas not been much investigated and researched in this country. The approach to this problem isfocused on the following: styles of environmental education in kindergartens and lower formsof primary schools, previous practice of education for sustainable development regarding preschooland primary teachers and their needs for future education within the field of educationfor sustainable development in the Republic of Croatia.Key words: environment, sustainable development, education, lifelong learning, educationalinstitutions, school, pupils, teachers27
