The interview was held onthe occasion of the international conference Philosophy and SocialSciences, which took place on May 9–13, 2012 at Villa Lanna inPrague.EVENTThe Learned Society AssemblyThe Learned Society of the Czech Republic two-day GeneralAssembly took place at the Hall of Patriots of the CollegiumCarolinum and at the ASCR’s main building on 14–15 May 2012. Atthis gathering, Jiří Grygar, well-known astronomer and popularizerof science, and Martin Hilský, renowned professor of Englishliterature and translator, were bestowed the Society’s Medal for theircontributions to the advancement of science. Scientist Awards werepresented to historian Petr Čornej and chemist Jaroslav Stejskal.Junior Scientist Awards were given to chemists Otakar Frank andJan Veselý. Awards were also presented to pedagogues and tostudents from Czech high schools.Professor Petr Pokorný was elected the president of the Councilof the Executive Board of the Learned Society of the CzechRepublic for the period May 2012–May 2014.SCIENCE AND RESEARCHHumanities as a Bridge between National Identityand Global OpennessThis is the title of a lecture by Professor Jaroslav Pánek, VicePresident of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, tobe delivered during International Conference Humanities andthe Contemporary World. The symposium was hosted by theMontenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts and was held from7 to 9 June, 2012 at Podgorica, Montenegro.ANNIVERSARY150 Years of the Union of Czech Mathematiciansand PhysicistsThe Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists celebratedthe 150 th anniversary of its foundation. On the occasion of thisanniversary on March 28, 2012, the Union at Karolinum, the seat ofthe Charles University, a festive ceremony, attended by outstandingpersonalities headed by the President of the Czech Republic VáclavKlaus.The Union was founded in 1862 as the Association for FreeLectures in Mathematics and Physics. From the beginning, its goalwas the improvement of the teaching physics and mathematics atschools on all levels and of all types and further, to support andpromote the development of those sciences. As a consequence ofpatriotic efforts, the Association was enlarged in 1869 into the Unionof Czech Mathematicians and Physicists. In the early 1950s, theUnion had to transfer its property to the newly establishedCzechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CSAV) and it becamea learned society affiliated with CSAV. The mathematical part of itslibrary became the basis of the library of the Mathematical Instituteof CSAV, and is located there at present. Today, the Union has about2,800 members. The Union itself, or in collaboration with universitiesand research institutes, organizes national as well as internationalconferences, symposia, seminars, and Summer or Winter schools.The Union follows the teaching of mathematics and physics inschools and proposes improvements. It encourages talentedstudents and participates in the organization of the Mathematicaland Physical Olympiad and other student competitions.Czech Post has issued a stamp commemorating the 150 thAnniversary of the Foundation of the Union of Czech Mathematiciansand Physicists.SVĚT KNIHY 2012Vtradičním dějišti – Průmyslovém paláci na Výstavišti v pražskýchHolešovicích – se ve dnech 17. až 20. května 2012uskutečnil 18. ročník mezinárodního knižního veletrhu a literárníhofestivalu Svět knihy Praha 2012. Letošní ročník, který navštívilopřes 35 000 zájemců, se tematicky zaměřil na literaturu černomořskéoblasti. Čestným hostem bylo Rumunsko, jehož kulturase prezentovala v nejrůznějších variacích – od rumunských kniha autorů, přes divadelní hry, filmy, fotografie až po rumunské tance,řemesla a ochutnávku rumunských vín. Milovníky „devátéhoumění“ a zejména vynikající české i zahraniční „komiksáře“ přilákalodruhé stěžejní téma veletrhu – Komiks.Mezi vystavovateli nechybělo Nakladatelství Academia, kterétentokrát vsadilo především na oceňovaná díla a autory – mj. třídílnékompletní vydání Souostroví Gulag Alexandra Solženicyna(Magnesia Litera za nakladatelský čin), Kinematografie zapomněníautora Štěpána Hulíka (Magnesia Litera za objev roku) či Dílo WilliamaShakespeara v překladu Martina Hilského, nositele Medaileab36Učené společnosti pro rok 2012.
