Astigmatic refractive error is detected in 40 percent
of the patients diagnosed with cataracts. During the
treatment of cataracts, other visual defects can be also
treated. Astigmatism is eliminated along with cataracts
through toric intraocular lenses and people become able
to live without glasses.
In 450,000 cataract surgeries performed last year in
our country, only 5,000 toric intraocular lenses were
used and 83,000 people continued wearing glasses
due to astigmatism after the surgery because no toric
intraocular lenses were used though needed.
Advising patients to consult their physician about
astigmatism and treatment options before the cataract
surgery, Prof. Dr. Osman Şevki Arslan has emphasized
that people becoming aware of toric intraocular
lenses that can also correct astigmatism and that this
awareness is of importance to completely get rid of
glasses after the surgery. In his speech, Arslan has
said, “About half of the causes of curable blindness in
the world consist of cataract cases. In our country, the
number of cataract surgeries per year has reached
450,000 with a nearly tenfold increase in the percentage
of cataract patients undergoing a surgery over the last
decade. This is not only an increase in number, but also
an indication that our country has progressed in cataract
surgeries in terms of knowledge and technology at the
same level as the Western countries. In addition, the
treatment of astigmatic defects with toric intraocular
lenses contributes greatly to clear vision after surgery
and substantially eliminates the dependence of our
patients on glasses. It should be emphasized that this
can be solved with a single operation by selection of the
right intraocular lens to be placed during the cataract
surgery.
On the other hand, another point which should be
emphasized is that 19 million children worldwide are
visually impaired. The treatment of childhood visual
defects especially within the first three years of life is
of critical importance because after this age, amblyopia
progresses, and although the eye disease is treated,
amblyopia restricts vision. Therefore, we find it very
important for the Ministry of Health, Ministry of National
Education, Turkish Ophthalmological Association
and other NGOs to conduct vision screenings in great
cooperation.”
What is a cataract?
A cataract is one of the most common eye diseases
associated with aging and is one of the leading causes of
vision loss*1.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that
nearly 19 million people are bilaterally blind from
cataracts in the world. These figures indicate that
almost half of all global cases of blindness are caused
by cataracts* 2.
Kataraktın tedavisi yapılırken diğer görme kusurlarının
da tedavisi gerçekleştirilebiliyor. Torik astigmatlı göz içi
lens ile katarakt ile birlikte astigmat da ortadan kalkıyor
ve kişileri gözlüksüz bir hayat bekliyor.
Ülkemizde geçen yıl gerçekleştirilen 450.000 katarakt
operasyonunda sadece 5.000 torik astigmatlı göz içi lens
kullanılırken, ihtiyaç olduğu halde 83.000 kişi torik göz
içi lens kullanılmadığı için ameliyat sonrası astigmat
sebebiyle gözlük kullanmaya devam etmiştir.
Katarakt operasyonu öncesi hastaları astigmatları ve
tedavi seçenekleri ile ilgili doktorlarına danışmaları
konusunda uyaran Prof. Dr. Osman Şevki Arslan,
astigmatı da düzeltebilen torik göz içi mercek
konusunda hastaların bilinçlenmesinin ameliyattan
sonra gözlükten tamamen kurtulmak için önem arz
ettiğini vurguladı. Arslan konuşmasında “Dünyada
tedavi edilebilir körlük sebeplerinin yaklaşık yarısını
katarakt olguları teşkil ediyor. Yurdumuzda da son on
yılda katarakt hastalarının ameliyat edilme oranlarında
yaklaşık on kat bir artışla yıllık katarakt ameliyatı sayısı
450.000 seviyelerine ulaşmıştır. Bu sadece sayısal
anlamda bir artış olmayıp, bilgi donanımı ve teknolojik
açıdan da ülkemizin katarakt ameliyatları açısından Batı
ile aynı düzeyde ilerlediğini gösteriyor. Aynı zamanda
astigmatik kusurların da torik göz içi mercekleri ile
tedavi edilmesi ameliyat sonrası net görüşe çok büyük
katkı sağlamakta ve hastalarımızın gözlük bağımlılığını
büyük ölçüde ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Bunun da tek bir
operasyon ile katarakt cerrahisi sırasında konulan göz
içi merceğinin buna uygun seçilmesi ile çözülebildiğini
vurgulamak gerekiyor.
