Floods hit Cornwall
Last night 7.5cm of rain fell in
parts of South Cornwall. As a
result there is now flooding in
some towns and villages and this
is causing chaos for thousands
of people. In the worst areas,
around Mevagissey, hundreds
of people had to evacuate their
homes shortly after midnight.
They are now staying in a
village hall outside the flooded
area. Yesterday evening, the
government asked the army to help. Captain
Laurence Scott and his men went from door
to door. They told people that the water levels
were rising quickly and to collect the things
they needed. Later soldiers arrived by boat
and helped old people and children to safety.
Captain Scott said, ‘We couldn’t order people
to leave their homes, but we strongly advised
them to do so. Some people weren’t happy at
first, especially when we told them that they
might be unable to go home for several days
or maybe even a week.’
This morning the rain is much lighter and
weather forecasters say it will stop by this
afternoon. However, they advise people to
be careful. The rain water will run into rivers
which have already flooded. This means the
streets will be full of water for some time.
Captain Scott and his men will visit people
who stayed in their homes later today. ‘We’ll
give food and blankets to people. They should
wait at home until we arrive,’ he suggests. ‘We
advise people not to open their doors while
there is water outside.’ Meanwhile people
are helping each other. They are making their
neighbours hot drinks and giving them warm
clothes to wear.
This part of Cornwall floods from time to
time and many of the local people think that
the towns need better flood warnings and
better flood defences. ‘This is the third flood
in ten years so I’m going to suggest that we
ask the government for some money,’ said
Mrs Thompson, a local shopkeeper. ‘It costs
hundreds of thousands of pounds each time
it happens. We’re a small town and we can’t
afford it.’
