A life-changing
experience
Two years ago Dave Dugan was a baker. He
used to get up at four o’clock every morning
and cycle four kilometres. Because he worked
different hours to his friends and relatives he
didn’t use to see them very often. But he did
like to sing and at the weekend he sometimes
used to go to an open-mike night in his town.
‘I used to vary what I sang. Sometimes it was pop,
sometimes it was country,’ he said. ‘Over the years the
organisers let me have more and more time. The last
few times I sang there I was on stage for about half an
hour,’ he remembers.
Then his life changed. He decided to enter a TV talent
show. He says it was fun. ‘You really had to work hard
though. The singing coach made me do lots of exercises,
but they didn’t let me use my voice too much in
case I hurt it.’
Dave didn’t win the competition but he came third.
People really liked him and so he got an agent, Stan
Silver. Now he sings professionally and has got a new album com-
ing out. ‘I used to dream that I had this kind of life. I still don’t think I realise that it’s not a dream.
It’s also a lot harder than in my dreams.’ His agent manages his life. He makes him do a lot of
shows. ‘Stan phones me every day with a few new bookings. Sometimes I think “Oh no. Not another
one!” I’ve only had five days off in the last two months.’ He laughs. ‘The more gigs I do, the
better known I am and of course the more money there is for both of us. Besides, Stan doesn’t
make me work every day. He always lets me have a lie in on Sunday.’
