JM: UÊwiadomi∏em sobie, ˝e w 1984 roku wyruszyliÊmy do Niemiec

JM: I realised that in 1984 we went to Germany to look, among
other things, for the answer to the question not yet posed (Kuda Gierman?).
We were travelling through divided Germany by vehicle
(tank) without a barrel. On our way back, we already had a barrel,
it was a roll of four paintings we made onsite. Still not knowing the
question, we were equipped (armed) by developed economy. At night
on the highway, truck drivers would slow down to look at our vehicle
with a barrel.
The second trip (the offensive) in 1987 by three vehicles brought
about the question Kuda Gierman? which became the title of the only
collective painting by Gruppa (6x6m). The painting got lost. In 2018,
we made a more or less accurate reproduction (4x4m) based on the
few photographs we had of the painting in its intermediate phases.
MS: We carried a barrel, a roll of primed canvases, stretcher bars,
and some grey patterned paper. Our fully loaded Fiat 126 struggled
to accelerate on the access road and could hardly pull into the traffic
on the highway. The speeding trucks would honk and nearly swept
us off the road. But it was nice to do the fieldwork, to travel, to do our art 01
research, to ride our Fiat 126 across West Germany. Museums and
collections in dozens of places. In Frankfurt, Thomas Bayrle almost
arranged an exhibition of our huge works at the Academy, but in the
end, we did not go for it, we had to move on. We also reached Cafe
Vienna in Hamburg, where our peers, the wild painters Walter Dahn,
brothers Albert and Markus Oehlen, and Martin Kippenberger, known
for pushing the boundaries of art, had their studios. We talked with
the owners of Kaffeehaus Vienna, the people who set up that space,
but the artists were not there at that time. In 1984, we recognised the
relations between the developed state and the peripheral state (experiencing
the prolonged martial law in Warsaw and Gdaƒsk), bringing
back from our journey a car full of books and paintings. In 1987, the
elements took over the space in Kassel: Gruppa along with Anda;
a visit to neighbouring country and meeting art people from around
the world; our packed vehicles: two small and a large Fiat, like
elements getting out of control. In 2018/2019/2020 we put all our
experiences together and turned them into a project Kuda Gierman.

PrzyjechaliÊmy tam z Jarkiem i trzema kolegami, malarzami z Warszawy:

Co do czerwieni, to by∏ wniosek wobec obrazu Kuda Gierman malowanego

JM: In fact, we extended the barrel to approx. 3m and there was
armour – quilts.
Red turned out to be a means of controlling the element.
There were also some attempts made to recognise an alternative
Kreuzberg by the wall. Turks (!) and Woron who brought Kantor
to Germany. But still only a gallery at the local culture centre.
The first trip brings, among others, the two men theme:
Kowalewski and Woêniak
now
Gilbert and George; Juszczak and Sempoliƒski; Szczepcio and Toƒcio;
Flip and Flap; Dolce and Gabbana; Kloss and Stirlitz; Max und Moritz.
MS: I will start with us painting the huge sheets for Sonia's kindergarten
in 1983. The drawing, A Disappearing Rhino, shows first signs
of collective painting. The snowy Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the
background far behind a group of animals is painted red below the white
snow area. Jarek noticed the possibility of using the flag colours*
and applied red paint. A year later, on our scholarship in Düsseldorf,
we painted four German paintings together. It was a collective work
from the first stroke of inspiration until the last touch.
* I Could Live in Africa is a 1983 film about musicians from Warsaw group
Izrael, made by a Danish documentary filmmaker Jacques de Koning.
Our trip to Kreuzberg to visit Andrzej Woron, who staged Bruno Schulz
at the Theater am Ufer and whose plays were inspired by Kantor's theatre.
We came there with Jarek and three friends of ours, painters from Warsaw:
Andrzej Zwierzchowski, Jacek Ziemiƒski and Miko∏aj Kasprzyk as participants
of the exhibition 6 Maler aus Warschau. I remember the sixth
painter, Andrzej Woron, cooking broth on two chickens.
As for the red colour, this was an observation made about the painting
Kuda Gierman painted by Gruppa in Kassel. We did not have
much time left, we went to Milan for an exhibition, our painting had not
been looking very promising for some time now. On a trip up and down
Mount Wilhelm, three out of six of us (Modzelewski, Sobczyk, Woêniak)
made up their minds: 'Let's paint it red'. We had Irish whiskey with us,
so in addition to figuring out how to save the Gruppa painting,
we could also appreciate Wilhelmshöhe's impressive architecture.
a wyciskane z tubek liczne czerwienie ∏ama∏y si´ w kilkadziesiàt

stàd figura dwóch wiezionych do domu ko∏der, wczeÊniej

Kuda global? Kuda przep∏ywy
informacji i danych? Kuda CO 2 , kredyty, d∏ugi? A mo˝e w odpowiedzi
powszechnych. Niemiecki Êlad za Humboldtem op∏ywa Êwiat,
bada cranial capacity, meteo i Brownie. W jednym ˝yciu, które si´
prze˝ywa, pojawia si´ jedno pytanie szczegó∏owe, które pozwala rozpoznaç
wiele ogólnych zagadnieƒ ziemskich i pozaziemskich, mikroi
makrofizycznych, psychologicznych i spo∏ecznych.
– kosmos – Pan Kopernik w Kosmosie,
– histori´, wojny, kolonializm – Pan Kopernik w Kosmosie, Gruppa

– kultur´ i sztuk´ – Polentransport, DoppelBeuys, Pracownia, CzystoÊç
z bananami, Gruppa chce sprzedaç k∏y, Nasza Guernica, Replika,
– polityk´, dyplomacj´, klimatologi´ – Dwie kobiety, Cranial..., Replika,
– wszystko – Pracownia.
Przypomnia∏ mi si´ pomys∏ wystawy Tradycja i talent indywidualny.
do wystawy Tradycja i talent indywidualny). Chemiczna i fizyczna

As for the picture, it was a fresh oil painting, layers still wet and new
paints mixed in with the old ones, with the numerous reds squeezed
out of the tubes and broken into dozens of shades (we would take
any paint tube which resembled red).
Quilts – the civilizational convenience that we had to equip ourselves
with, hence the figure of two quilts being brought home, previously
purchased to the studio in Atelierhaus on Sittarder Strasse in Düsseldorf.
JM: The question might sound anachronistic today, but does anyone
care about Kuda Gierman? anymore, Kuda global? Kuda data flow?
Kuda CO 2 , loans, debts? Or maybe an answer to this specific, local
question actually sums up all the universal anxieties. The German trail
behind Humboldt flows around the world, explores cranial capacity,
meteo and Brownie. In one lifetime you encounter a specific question
that helps you recognize many general issues - terrestrial and extraterrestrial,
micro- and macrophysical, psychological and social ones.
The answer is painterly; large, epic paintings that include:
– space – Mr. Copernicus in Space;
– history, wars, colonialism – Mr. Copernicus, Gruppa Wants to Sell 03
Tusks, Cranial Capacity Map, Till Eulenspiegel, Our Guernica,
– culture and art – Polentransport, DoppelBeuys, Workshop, Cleanliness
with Bananas, Gruppa Wants to..., Our Guernica, Replica;
– politics, diplomacy, climatology – Two Women, Cranial..., Replica,
– everything – Workshop.
I suddenly remembered our idea for an exhibition Tradition and individual
talent. Aren't we trying to make this idea come true through the Kuda
Gierman? exhibition? The painting is penetrated by artists, thinkers, or
thoughts alone. Maybe they are not canonical artists nor canonical
thoughts, but there is still some tradition involved, some base that came
to existence in the paintings as a derivative of these inspirations.
MS: (The CO 2 of tradition is harmful, there is too much of it, it could
be seriously/not seriously exchanged for the CO of individual talent and
referred to the exhibition Tradition and individual talent). The chemical
and physical essence of painting, light and pigments suspended
in a binder and thinking in layers of pigments. The light from the
warstwy farby a˝ do gruntu, odbija si´ od gruntu i z powrotem przechodzi
przez wszystkie warstwy farby do naszego oka, niosàc przekaz
skomplikowanej informacji o kolorach w warstwach, warstwach
gestu, rysunku, gruntu. Polityka pigmentów zawiera w sobie nasze
(artystek / artystów) swobodne gesty, znaki–litery–linie tekstu–znaczenia–zagadnienia–narracje
g∏osu artystki / artysty mi´dzy podobnymi g∏osami w przestrzeni polityki
wnioski i aktualnoÊç okreÊlajà artystk´ / artyst´, usytuowanie jej /
jego racji, naprzeciw której stojà inne, czasami lepiej uzasadnione
racje. ObjaÊniamy pole konfliktu w opisach i komentarzach do obrazów.
ObjaÊniamy materialnoÊç obrazu innà ni˝ materialnoÊç s∏owa. Obraz
myÊli i w myÊleniu odnosi si´ do przestrzeni mi´dzy s∏owem i obrazem.
Z dziwnych powodów cywilizacyjnych – kulturowych – niemal wszystko,
04 prowokacji (my rwiomsia na Zapad). W stosunkach z ludêmi i paƒstwami
odnosi si´ do wszystkich szesnastu wspólnych obrazów.
Artysta doÊwiadcza, przeprowadza prace studyjne, badania terenowe,
bawi si´ / nie bawi, trudzi / nie trudzi, cierpi z powodu dysonansu
poznawczego, gdy w sytuacji tego projektu musi arbitralnoÊç drugiego
artysty wziàç za swojà*.
* Dwa, trzy kraje i dwaj malujàcy wspólnie malarze. Mo˝e dobrym przyk∏adem
JM „#metoo” czyta „#meteo”, pokazujàc w∏asny kod i umo˝liwiajàc
surface passes through the layers of paint up to the ground, it bounces
off the ground and goes back through all layers of paint to our
eye, carrying a message of complex information about colours in layers,
layers of gesture, drawing, ground. The pigment policy includes our
(that is the artists') free gestures, signs-letters-lines of text-meanings-issues-narratives
in layers. It also includes openness to possible
change, to the next layer, to redesigning.
There is a difference between an artist's voice among similar voices
in the political space and an artist's voice that is political but stands
on its own rather than fits into the politics pursued. An artist is defined
by his or her experiences, intuitions, conclusions and relevance,
as well as the location of his/her arguments as opposed to other,
sometimes more justified ones. We explain the conflict area in the
descriptions and comments to the paintings. We explain the materiality
of the painting other than the materiality of the word. The painting
thinks and in its thinking refers to the space between word and image.
For strange civilizational and cultural reasons, almost everything
I have to say about the Germans – Poles – sounds provocative,
without actually being so. Maybe it is more about a denial of provocation
(my rwiomsia na Zapad). An artist uses analysis and criticism
in order to deal with people and countries, each time provoking
something. Problems do not disappear while new questions arise (do the
Germans say 'no' or do anything about any matter, for example,
regarding the dispute about Mr. Copernicus?) As an artist, I am
subject to conflict, but I also describe the conflict as if from the outside,
slightly imitating the conflict circle defined by a famous mediator:
1) Conflict of relations (without mediation): determined in part by instinct,
intuition, the arbitrariness of statements made individually by an artist,
in a wide common field. The conflict of relations applies to all sixteen
collective paintings. An artist experiences, carries out studies and field
research, plays/does not play, struggles/does not struggle, suffers
from cognitive dissonance when the project requires him or her
to treat the arbitrariness of the other artist as his or her own*.
* Two, three countries and two painters working together. Maybe the
#metoo–#meteo from the Theresa May and Angela Merkel painting
would be a good example. JM misreads #metoo as meteo, showing
zderzenia, co czyni obraz aktualnym w wymiarze groênych przemian
klimatu i prognoz nadchodzàcej grozy wynikajàcej z mieszania si´
polityk: klimatycznej i spo∏ecznej.
(2) Konflikt informacyjny (bez mediacji): aktualne – nieaktualne,
prawdziwe – nieprawdziwe, faktyczne – domniemane, sprawdzalne /
CZYSTOÂå odnosi konflikt informacyjny do ca∏oÊci sztuki wizualnej.
zaspokaja swoich potrzeb kosztem innych. Konkretny przyk∏ad obrazu
Nasza Guernica*: z jednej strony estetyki Wojny i propagandy Pokoju,
* GdzieÊ tu sà schowane nasze estetyki Wojny i propagandy Pokoju.
(4) Konflikt o charakterze klasowo-kastowym przebiegajàcy w ramach
struktur feudalnych zale˝noÊci, wobec strategii uprzywilejowaƒ (bez
mo˝liwoÊci mediacji): konkretny przyk∏ad obrazu DoppelBeuys…:
gdy na poziomie symbolicznym i realnym Beuys z Amerykà „lubià
si´”, realizujà to kosztem Kojota, ˝ywego zwierz´cia, ale te˝ symbolicznego
Êwi´tego zwierz´cia Indian Ameryki.
(5) Konflikt moralny (bez potrzeby mediacji): tu pasuje odmawianie
wyposa˝enia w cechy dojrza∏oÊci, odpowiedzialnoÊci i podmiotowoÊci
his own code and enabling collisions, which makes the painting very
relevant in terms of dangerous climate changes and forecasts of the
forthcoming terror resulting from the mixing of climate and social policies.
2) Information conflict (without mediation): up to date – outdated,
true – untrue, factual – implied, verifiable/checked – unverifiable/
unverified, random – what happens – arbitrary – what comes to mind.
We get lost, we go round and round, we grope and diagnose in the
dark, maybe like an organ, almost without the mediation of the senses.
Maybe the senses cannot keep up. It seems that everything is now
'more and more' and 'ever faster'*. All sixteen paintings can be assigned
an information conflict, let's take an example: the painting CLEAN-
LINESS relates the information conflict to the whole of visual art.
Everything in one picture: Natalia LL gives everyone Consumer
Art, Gilbert & George gives everyone simple and inverted symmetries
by stealing bananas, and once Natalia LL's bananas do not go where
they belong in JM and MS's painting, everyone gets CLEANLINESS.
* Goya's Black Paintings from 200 years ago strike as particularly
relevant in this context.
3) Conflict of interest (without the need for mediation): an artist does 05
not meet his or her needs at the expense of others. Let's take a specific
example of the painting Our Guernica*: on the one hand, the aesthetics
of War and the propaganda of Peace, on the other – a propaganda
of the free gesture of painting constructed a bit in opposition to these
aesthetics, which is something other than propaganda art, but also happens
to be the same thing. It turns out that there is variability in relation to this
painting: Guernica as painted by Picasso to play a part in a given time
is different than the Guernica as we know it today, we the painters
of Our Guernica. It's the same Guernica, but also a very different one.
* Our aesthetics of War and Peace propaganda are hidden somewhere here.
4) Class and caste conflict occurring within the structures of feudal
dependencies, as opposed to the privilege strategy (without the possibility
of mediation): Let's take DoppelBeuys as a specific example:
Beuys and America 'like' each other on the symbolic and real level.
However, they do so at the expense of Kojot, a living creature, an animal
worshipped by the indigenous Americans.
5) Moral conflict (without the need for mediation): here it is appropriate
to refuse to embrace the qualities of maturity, responsibility and
wyposa˝ony w dojrza∏oÊç, odpowiedzialnoÊç i wartoÊci. Konkretny
przyk∏ad podwójnego ujawnienia w obrazie Cranial capacity map*:
pierwsze ujawnienie nieprzyjemnego skojarzenia mierzenia pojemnoÊci
czaszki ze sformu∏owaniem Kuda Gierman?; drugie ujawnienie
aktu autocenzury, którego dokona∏em, by cz´Êciowo zatrzeç informacje
mapa mog∏aby byç umieszczona w muzeum awangardy ms2.
– Problemy uwidocznione na obrazie Pan Kopernik w Kosmosie [Spór
polsko-niemiecki], które prowadzà do wniosku, ˝e spór o Pana Kopernika
V1, V2… a˝ do Vn, gdzie n jest liczbà naturalnà (zbiór N bez zera).
JM: Wystawa polifoniczna, przewijajàce si´ przez obrazy wàtki:
06 Beuys, Gilbert and George, Kiefer, Picasso, Gruppa. ˚yrafek Brownie,
kojoty, konie, sowa, koÊç s∏oniowa, krew, Gruppa. Wszystko jest poddane
decyzjom kompozycyjnym i kolorystycznym, wàtki stajà si´
formà ustanawiajàcà obrazy. Dopiero wtedy zaczynajà si´ ujawniaç
relacje wy∏apywane poczàtkowo z rozmów, intuicji i prze˝ytych zdarzeƒ.

– The challenge is to determine what views I actually have when I am not
endowed with maturity, responsibility and values. Let's take a look
at a specific example of a double disclosure in the painting Cranial
Capacity Map*: the first disclosure refers to the unpleasant association
of measuring cranial capacity with the phrase Kuda Gierman?; the
second disclosure serves to reveal the self-censorship act I performed
to partially obliterate the information resulting from the first disclosure.
* By the way, I have a painting Map in the Museum, which asks whether
such a map could be placed in the avant-garde museum ms2.

JM: Polyphonic exhibition, recurrent themes: Beuys, Gilbert and
George, Kiefer, Picasso, Gruppa. Brownie the giraffe, coyotes, horses,
an owl, ivory, blood, Gruppa. Everything is subjected to decisions
about composition and colour, themes become a form that constitutes
the paintings. Only then do the relationships captured initially
in conversations, intuitions and experiences begin to be revealed.
The paintings start to play, and they also become independent.
The Germanness of this exhibition is also Russian (kuda Gierman?),
like yurodivy. Clear messages and explanations are given in the language
of painting flash through the madness and incomprehensible
speech. People come even from distant governorates, offer whatever
they have in order to hear the incomprehensible words of hope and
explain the incomprehensible signs given by fate.
Visitors to the insane Hölderlin in Tübingen paid tribute to the genius and listened
to his vague speech. We also visited this memorial place of the tower.

The text in the painting Workshop is about coming to a full circle, starting
from the two painters Gilbert and George who consider themselves
sculptors, through painters JM and MS, and ending with Juszczak,
an art historian focused on recognizing the artificiality of art, and Sempoliƒski
focused on the individual effort of a painter in a dirt furrow.

Technology. The Kuda Gierman? painting by Gruppa was painted with oil
paint, while our collective paintings were painted with egg tempera. These are
two different worlds, for example: when we decided to paint the Gruppa
painting red in order to finish it, oil paints were wet and mixed with the
reds applied onto the canvas, the painting got a large number of shades
and colour values of red. We could not have made it with tempera because
it would have dried within a few dozen minutes after being put onto the
canvas. However, it is definitely tempera that offers more in terms of light
and its different layers, illuminating the paintings and giving them a glow
even when it gets dark. You can see several separate layers through
each other, the paintings retain their abstract features: certain severity and
purity. At the same time, you can trace back the way they were painted,
understand them naturalistically, almost every step can be distinguished
and named; sometimes the names of pigments become relevant.

The Germans recognised the metaphysical importance of work.
Even if they were not the first ones to do so, they were certainly the
first in terms of their insight and scale. Work was probably the first
truly German topic; although we would be more likely to associate
them (and they would most likely associate themselves) with art
or thinking – this nation of poets and philosophers – or perhaps
with war or even militarism. But it was work that became, at least
starting with Hegel, through Marx, ending with Jünger, an issue
that every modern-minded auf Deutsch needed to address. Arbeit

Kant's reflections on obedience and private use of reason can
already be considered innovative: since the social sphere is always
divided into separate areas of work and subordinate to institutions
and professional policies, it is clearly separated from freedom and
public use of reason specific to public opinion. Work as defined
by Kant does not determine a citizen's social status but describes
only one of their spheres of life. You live, therefore you work. Work
is almost a synonym of materiality. And matter cannot be rejected
in the contemporary world. Who knows, it might even be one
of the greatest modern discoveries: the significance of the insignificant
(of the dirty, the inhuman, but also the ubiquitous, the 'economic'
– hence the 'sobriety' of the 19 th century, quite astonishing
when compared to the staggering 20 th century).
Two problems (addressed from the very beginning by 'Germans'):
understanding the materiality of work and the positioning of the
'immaterial'.
Firstly:
(1) a long tradition of recognising work as a form of activity,
sometimes even one that defines us as human beings, based on
our capacity to transform nature, to process it (usually with tools –
no wonder 'the philosophy of technology' was born in Germany),
and to adapt it to one's own needs. This understanding is a bit
'artistic'. It entails being in touch with matter, shaping, producing,
hence the cultural role of work that contributes to creating a brand
new, artificial world. Work as an effort, toil, struggle, which also
brings us to the concept of a fight, a clash with powers foreign to
humanity (the Prometheism of work). Every working person is a bit
of a conqueror and demiurge at the same time (a clever and intelligent
animal able to use tools and to break free from its animality
through different means). Work as a conquest.
And yet, (2) at the same time – the emerging awareness that this
is only a semblance, or rather a non–random illusion; that this relationship
(mediated through tools and technology) of zur Natur
09

nazbyt jeszcze bezpoÊrednio, bo praca to nade wszystko
cz∏owiek, lecz konkretnie ustrukturowana zbiorowoÊç, i ˝e
„materii” i kontaktów z nià zastàpiona zostaje materialnoÊcià

To napi´cie mo˝na socjalistycznie wyostrzaç, podkreÊlajàc

is understood too literally because work is above all a social thing.
Work is never about an individual or an abstract man, but a specifically
structured collectivity, and there is no work without
division of labor. The materiality of 'matter' and being in touch
with it is replaced by the materiality of 'social relations', which
determines and shapes the former. This tension can be socialistically
exacerbated by putting emphasis on the conflicting nature
of the divisions, or blurred in reaction, as when a 'nation' is put
in place of 'humans': integrated into a machine or beast, as organised
as it is organic. A steel animal for which a conquest can
become the right form of work.
The humorist Foucault said that Europe – starting with the seventeenth-century
idea of balance of power and the development
of domestic police policy and external diplomatic policy – was
created and continues to exist as a mechanism to ensure that
Germany does not become an 'Empire':
One must never forget that Europe, as a legal and political entity,
as a diplomatic and political security system, is nothing more than
a yoke imposed on Germany by the stronger states of the region
each time the dream of the Empire needs to be taken out their
mind; no matter if it's about Charlemagne, Barbarossa or the little
man who burned down with his dog and lover one May evening
in his office. Europe is a way for Germany to forget about the Empire.
With no chances for the emperor to come, comes as no surprise
that Germany announces every now and then: ‘We are Europe,
because you have made us Europe’. And the country addresses
these words precisely those who really wanted Germany to be Europe
and nothing more – to the spokesmen of French imperialism,
English domination or Russian expansionism.
Fear of conquering the continent as a correlate of the desire to conquer
outside it.

L´k przed podbojem kontynentu jako korelat pragnienia podboju
poza nim.
organizacji samego procesu pracy.
z nim, a zarazem poza niego wykracza.
ile „idealizm”: nie w znaczeniu oderwania od realnoÊci, od Êwiata;
si´ w codziennej orce (wysi∏ek s∏u˝y „kulturze”: idea∏ sublimacji
albo in˝ynier w operze) i ˝e nie wystarczy te˝ jednak poprzestaç
na „pi´knym duchu” (kultura winna byç „ucieleÊniona”: idea∏ tresury)
– czyni z Niemca typ antropologicznie (czyli historycznie)
interesujàcy.
[…]
Secondly:
how and where to place the immaterial in terms of work? Preferably,
of course, a direct result of the development or organisation of the
work process itself, despite the fact that the result – freedom, enlightenment,
space for free play, communism, communication – is not
part of this development or organisation. The result transcends the
development, even though there are some points of contact. As real
is, it seems more of a postulate. Therefore, 'idealism' is much more
German than utopianism: not in the sense of detachment from reality,
from the world; rather as a way of 'experiencing' the world – facing
the tension between matter, the one exposed by the modern work,
and all thing that detaches from it; the 'goal', the core, the invisible.
This tension – stemming from the fact that it does not suffice to be down-
-to-earth and endure the toils of daily life ('culture' feeds on effort:
the ideal of sublimation an engineer in the opera) and that it is not
enough to settle for 'a beautiful spirit' culture should be 'embodied':
the ideal of training) – makes Germany anthropologically
11
(i.e. historically) interesting.
[…]
Work as understood 'in a German way' – i.e. not primarily as the
processing of matter, but rather as a social relationship – was also
communication, i.e. a reproduction of the conditions of maintaining
interpersonal relationships (even those based on exploitation).
Here is what the famous 'end of work' could mean: the transition
from production to consumption as digestion, and consumption of all
relationships in the name of naked collisions within the response
system. Conflicts could still be associated with the reflective (indirect)
nature of interests – clashes occur 'selflessly', which also
means that their motives and sources are located somewhere else,
they are external (although not necessarily hidden).

Hypothesis about the collective painting by Modzelewski and
Sobczyk
Art becoming a reservoir of slogans and patterns (for life, business,
marketing, fashion, etc.) comes at a price, and entails a promotion
of a very specific (however old–fashioned, if relevant at all)
understanding of art itself. It probably has to do with the location
of new forms of artistic activity in the social sphere, even though
there is hardly anything 'creative' about them. The status of all
human activity has also been subject to evolution – on the one
hand, any activity can turn out to be some form of creation, i.e.
a semi–artistic transformation of the matter (i.e. ourselves or the
world around us), but on the other, all activities, even the most
peculiar ones, can be paid work. In other words: all activities can
be 'formative' or become paid work. Well, this evolution has been
making it easier to bring work closer to art. However, art itself has
long ago broken with the (rarely serious) standards of creative
expression or the formation of matter (transforming the matter
given to us). Sometimes it would come closer, somewhat from the
other side, to work – but only if understood as the organisation
a certain social relationship. Work will always remain cooperation.
Kuda Gierman? exhibition catalogue walks us through the
process of creating specific works – allows us to see what follows
an idea, initiation, beginning, continuation, development or digression.
At the same time, regardless of the techniques
processing the matter, the form), some very interesting metamorphoses
occur at the relationship level (according to the 'German'
theory of work as an organisation social relations). It only takes
two to build a community – especially if their work happens in the
objectified outside world, away from all intimacy. The latter sometimes
the starting point for postulates of empathy – understood as
experiencing someone else's state, adopting their way of thinking.

metamorfozy w obszarze relacji (zgodnie z „niemieckà” teorià
pracy jako organizacji stosunków spo∏ecznych). Dwa to ju˝ spo∏ecznoÊç
– zw∏aszcza gdy rozgrywa si´ w ˝ywiole zobiektywizowanego
zewn´trza, z dala od wszelkiej intymnoÊci. Ta ostatnia bywa punktem
wyjÊcia postulatów empatii – rozumianej jako prze˝ycie czyjegoÊ
stanu w samym sobie, przyj´cie czyjegoÊ sposobu myÊlenia.
Wówczas wspólne przedsi´wzi´cie to wynik ewentualnej negocjacji
pomi´dzy odczutym / zrozumianym punktem widzenia a moim
w∏asnym. Kooperacja, czasami walka perspektyw (wiem, o co ci
chodzi, teraz id´ dalej – czasem Twojà, czasem swojà Êcie˝kà). Sà
to, rzecz jasna, perspektywy wykonawców – powiedzmy, ˝e przede
wszystkim na wspólne dzie∏o. Mo˝emy potem szacowaç ich
udzia∏y, Êlady mniej lub bardziej wyraêne, wzajemne interwencje
i uszanowania.

dostrzegania go tak˝e poza sobà, niemal wsz´dzie, a przede

pracy nad przes∏anym szkicem, nie tyle wczuwa si´ w (intencje)

w∏asnej perspektywy – widzi ju˝ wszelako, jak Modzelewski
pracuje w nades∏anym Sobczyku. I na odwrót. Widzieç innego w sobie
to uspo∏ecznienie chwalebne – dostrzec, ˝e jestem te˝ poza

point of view may result in a collective work, cooperation, sometimes
a clash of perspectives (I know what you mean, let me move
on – I may do it your way, but I may also do it my own way). These
are, of course, perspectives of artists, mostly regarding their collective
work. Later on, we can estimate their contributions, their
(more or less clear) traces, mutual interventions and acts of respect.
Perhaps, however, the very possibility of establishing a perspective
should not be taken for granted. Perhaps no point of view
can be adopted. What would this signify? It may mean, among
other things, that a perspective (that of Modzelewski, Sobczyk)
is one of the tools (mastered to some degree by Modzelewski and
Sobczyk respectively, but not only by them, not only inspiring their
work). Using the tool – especially as we work together – requires
us to recognize it also outside ourselves, almost everywhere, and
above all in our partner. As he gets to work on the submitted sketch,
Modzelewski is not so much empathetic to Sobczyk (or intentions),
but already aware of himself responding to Sobczyk's work,
though by means imposing his own perspective. And the other
way around. To see someone else yourself is socially praiseworthy.
To see yourself outside of yourself is socially productive.

— Workshop…
I wanted this interior, which brings to mind Kiefer, to be filled with
different light and a different story, slightly pink air. But the inexorable
text gave it a realistic space.
The text* written on the painting, as if taken from Kiefer's painting, the
workshop with a rhythm of silicate bricks, as if located in an attic built
from boards in Kiefer's painting, the light entering the workshop
through a huge upper skylight, the small and big letters of two texts
glowing in the light, or rather, of the basic text, the primary one,
typewritten, painted here as smaller letters, and the hand comments,
annotations, painted here as larger letters. The text was created
after our visit to the exhibition dedicated to two painters, Gilbert and
George, who consider themselves sculptors (authors of themselves,
their own living sculptures). It was our way of repaying for inspiration.
By the way, on our way to this jubilee event, we already knew
that we would deal with Gilbert and George as a pair of painters
(just as we are a pair of painters; a pair of minds, just as we are
a pair of minds and as Jusz and Sem are a pair of minds; as a pair
of elders – old men; and we will deal with the pair as a pair, that
is: who could match whom here: cranes as machines and cranes
as birds, smoke in the wind with both kinds of cranes, we as a pair
of painters with the female characters from Goya's painting: Three
Moirai, Parcae, earthly and extraterrestrial matters).

CzystoÊç. Gilbert and George zmylili banana Natalii LL jako
mistrzowie powtórzenia tej samej albo podobnej sceny, mistrzowie
symetrii prostych i symetrii odwróconych.

Cleanliness, 2020, 200x200 cm, egg tempera on canvas
Cleanliness. As masters of repetition of the same or a similar
scene, masters of simple symmetry and inverted symmetry, Gilbert
and George reinterpreted Natalia LL's banana. The banana does
not go where it's supposed to, it is not intended exclusively for the
model in the photo, a woman, always generalized, a woman
always oppressed in almost all interpretations of Consumer Art.
The woman oppressed in art is replaced with CLEANLINESS:
a new order in the bamboo grove, the public things that Gilbert
and George play with become signs of sin and penance, become
commonplace.
— Cleanliness with a banana…
a terrible beginning of the painting, the clumsily applied red
and umber paint which made the face break down into cruel
caricatures. This, combined with the background, resulted in the
accusation of misogyny. Green land pigment and a certain artistic
discipline along with the doubled bananas and the elimination of red
helped to slightly improve the fate of this painting. The cat needs
to be patted to purr happily.

gospodyni razem z wazà jest zbudowana z epicykli.
Krok drugi: Przedstawienie sporu polsko-niemieckiego w jego
warstwach i umieszczenie ich na orbicie.

Mr. Copernicus in Space [Polish-German Dispute],
2012, 230x360 cm, egg tempera on canvas
Centre of Contemporary Art 'Znaki Czasu' in Toruƒ
(This comment comes from our old resources from 2014, as the
Mr. Copernicus painting featured in the exhibition Kuda Gierman.
Jaros∏aw Modzelewski, Marek Sobczyk is from 2012).
Step one: Composition in an ellipse divided according to two axes
into white and red quarters, depicting Mr. Copernicus leaving the
house. His housekeeper is waiting at home with a vase of soup,
the housekeeper with the vase is built of epicycles.
Step two: Presenting the layers of the Polish-German dispute and
placing them in orbit.
Layer a) Wunderwaffe cases: the V2; space mirror; Der Spiegel
mentioning the V3: the headline from the cover: Wunderwaffe:
Polnische Antisemiten aus Armia Krajowa [Heimatarmee]: the V3
as a final conclusion, but also a conclusion reflected in a mirror
installed in space for the destruction of targets on Earth and in Space
by reflected light (originally intended to be sunlight).
Layer b) Monkeys: the one named Copernicus (Latin for Pan
Kopernik, as we say it Polish) is in orbit, depicted in the moment
of (at some point) leaving home to go into space pretending to be Mr. Copernicus;
a monkey named Kopernikus (German for Copernicus)
orbits, depicted in the moment (at any time) of his participation
in space-Earth operation on his living, exposed brain. [Funny
Monkey that she dares to When she might fake human being].
Step three: A board with a description – interpretation, placed next
to the exhibited painting, featuring (apart from illustrative material)
ilustracyjnego znajdujà si´ te˝ teksty dotyczàce obrazu i zagadnieƒ,
których obraz dotyka (komentarze; didaskalia).
Zagadnienie A) Pan Kopernik wychodzi do pracy, zostawia
gospodyni´ z wazà zupy. Elipsa jako orbita sprawia (mo˝e sprawiç),
˝e wszystko wróci do punktu wyjÊcia i Pan Kopernik zastanie
gospodyni´ z wazà zupy i dostanie swojà zup´ w swoim czasie.
[Promienie i epicykle elipsy budujà t´ gospodyni´ (wraz z wazà)
i ∏àcznie z elipsà sà przedmiotem pracy Pana Kopernika].
Zagadnienie B) Co si´ dzieje na orbicie. [Wizerunki na orbicie
powtarzajà si´ (echo; po kole; obrót; powrót)].
(B)3. Krà˝à, ale równie˝ przecinajà orbit´ rakiety V2 – produkt
niemieckiej myÊli naukowej i technicznej. Ta technologia by∏a u˝ywana
równie˝ dla wysy∏ania zwierzàt w kosmos. [Pierwsze ˝ywe
organizmy: muszki owocowe Drosophila Melanogaster by∏y wys∏ane
w kosmos tu˝ po II wojnie Êwiatowej w∏aÊnie rakietami V2].
also texts about the painting and the addressed issues (comments;
stage directions).
Issue A) Mr. Copernicus goes to work, leaves his housekeeper with
a vase of soup. The ellipse as an orbit makes (or may make)
everything return to the starting point and Mr. Copernicus may
find his housekeeper home with the vase of soup and could get
his soup in time. [The housekeeper (along with the vase) is built
out of rays and epicycles of the ellipse, which (together with the
ellipse) are the subject of Mr. Copernicus' work].
Issue B) What is happening in orbit. [Images in orbit are repeated
(echo; circulation; rotation; return)].
(B)1. Germans placed the concave spherical mirror as a space
weapon in orbit in order to focus the rays of light into a beam,
intended to destroy targets on Earth/in Space.
(B)2. On the opposite side, there is a weekly Der Spiegel [No. 18 /
9.4.13] in orbit. The headline on the cover informs us about
a wonderful weapon: the V3 [Polish anti-Semites from the Home
Army as a weapon that can be used for both defensive and offensive
purposes].
(B)3. The V2 rockets in orbit, but also cutting through the orbit –
a product of German scientific and technical thought. This technology
was also used to send animals into space. [The first living
creatures: fruit flies Drosophila Melanogaster were sent into space
just after World War II in the V2 rockets].
(B)4. Monkeys move in orbit: a monkey named Copernicus and
another one named Kopernikus. The monkey named Kopernikus
participates in an experiment: he is sent by a V2 rocket to space
21
22
uczestniczy w eksperymencie: jest wysy∏ana rakietà V2 w kosmos,
w czasie tego eksperymentu sà te˝ badane jej reakcje mózgowe
(eksperyment jest przeprowadzany na odkrytym mózgu). Ma∏pka
Copernicus naÊladuje (z∏o-dziejstwo) Pana Kopernika i naÊladujàc,
wychodzi z domu w kosmos, to jej eksperyment: udaç cz∏eka,
w którym ona uczestniczy.
Zagadnienie C) Spór polsko-niemiecki wygrywajà Niemcy dzi´ki
przewadze technologicznej w rozbudowywaniu cudownej broni
malarskiej i malarskiego sprytu.
Inspiracje: praca Pana Kopernika i praca w epicyklach; ok∏adka
tygodnika „Der Spiegel”; okolicznoÊci wobec sporu polsko-niemieckiego;
dwie wersje nazwiska Kopernika: „Copernicus” i „Kopernikus”;
istnienie cudownej broni Wunderwaffe; ma∏pki wysy∏ane
w kosmos rakietami V2 (od muszek Drosophila Melanogaster
potem ca∏a seria: ma∏pek, ma∏p, ludzi).
U˝yte Êrodki: geometria elipsy (jej ogniska okreÊlajàce przyciàganie
i odpychanie); epicykle; tory kina grawitacyjnego i przenikajàce
wszystko fale grawitacji; bia∏o-czerwono-czarna gama dla podkreÊlenia
publicystycznego i propagandowego charakteru w zarysowaniu
sporu polsko-niemieckiego.
[Warszawa 2014]
in order to examine his brain reactions (the experiment is carried
out on his exposed brain). The monkey named Copernicus imitates
(crookedness) Mr. Copernicus and while imitating, leaves home
to go into space, this is his own experiment: to fake a human
being.
Issue C) The German-Polish dispute is won by Germany due to the
country's technological advantage in developing miraculous
weapons [Wunderwaffe Vn, n for the natural number from one
to infinity].
Issue D) The painter intentionally deprived his painting of all of his
skills and wit. It is an artistic statement built only from what is necessary
and what remains at the basic stage of development (just like
painters).
Inspirations: the work of Mr. Copernicus and work in epicycles;
the cover of the weekly Der Spiegel; the circumstances regarding
the Polish-German dispute; two versions of the name of Copernicus:
'Copernicus' and 'Kopernikus'; the existence of the wonderful
Wunderwaffe weapon; the monkeys sent into space with the V2
rockets (from Drosophila Melanogaster flies to a bunch of monkeys,
apes, and people).
Means used: the geometry of the ellipse (its foci determining the
attraction and repulsion); the epicycles; the tracks of gravitational
cinema and the gravitational waves penetrating everything; the
white-red-black range to emphasize the journalistic and propaganda
character of the Polish-German dispute.

Blut und Teppichperiode, 2020, 200x200 cm, egg tempera
on canvas
— The picture was inspired by the final frame from a film by Michael
Haneke. Unable to pay for gas at the station (because of a broken
ATM and a pre-holiday queue in the bank), the main character
kills several people in the bank at random and commits suicide.
Dark blood slowly flows onto the fluffy carpet. I remembered the
term Blut und Boden, Earth and Blood, the theory of German
national romanticism. The dead man's body feeds the bank carpet
with blood. I am trying to use a new pigment – iron green –
to paint the background of the painting.
Repeated frame [Territories Recovered Twice]
Film. Just like in the film, we are dealing with a game of moving
images, that means still images creating the illusion of movement.
As for the repetition of the main element of the image, the figure
lying on the deep-pile carpet, the carpet obviously resembling
grass, which right now is soaking with blood leaking from the
head of the dead body. The lower right part of the main image
is reduced to a quarter, there are four repeated subtitles under the
composition: [Zweimal wiedererlangter Boden], a large white
inscription repeated twice as if belonging or making a reference
to the large lying body, and a smaller black inscription repeated
twice, referring to, belonging to the reduced repetition of the
scene; dead bodies lying on the carpets soaking with blood.

tempera on canvas
From flesh and blood. Selling ivory to Hagenbeck's factory, the
one that Tomek Wilmowski's dad together with Captain Smuga
worked for by hunting animals; selling what is valuable to Hagenbeck.
When you take a closer look, the group of men who brought
the ivory tusks can be taken as Gruppa – friends who came to the
factory to sell their best products. The Company will eventually use
Gruppa's pure ethnicity to showcase the so-called ZOO people,
the natural people (as opposed to the cultured people*), coming
from regions unspoiled by civilisation, protected in a reserve or dying
out upon coming into contact with a developed civilisation.
* They are so cultured that they can use, for example, three primary
colours.

it was difficult to make an artistic choice when facing the complicated

Gruppa to sell tusks – bad. Gruppa to paint Polish Neue Wilde –
wrong, not to carve in the Holocaust – wrong, oh Gruppa, everything
is wrong! The drawing got overbearingly treated with three
colours of moral anxiety.

AND THE FäBERBöCK’S DIRECTING STRATEGY, OR
NO MAN WILL EVER TOUCH US AGAIN.
— The four colours that have been in my mind – black, white,
navy blue and brown – used in various arrangements in several
paintings, here arranged into a chessboard, squares fitted into
one square.
The squares came first: the square image got broken down into 16
square fields, arranged in a very clever composition into a pattern
of squares of different colours, organised diagonally from the top
right to the bottom left (here is the order of the diagonal colours from
the left top: one square of zinc white, two squares of cobalt, three
squares of dark umber, four squares of black vines, three squares of
zinc white, two squares of cobalt, one square of dark umber).
The squares were covered by fields that take up half of the painting's
surface. The left half (the vertical strip) is a scene from the Action
How to Explain Pictures to the Dead Hare (we mean the paintings),
performed by Dead Hare held by Joseph Beuys. The performance
could be seen through a crack in the obscured window of the
Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf; the audience could not hear
the explanation of culture: the presence of painted images nor the
things whispered by Beuys into Dead Hare's ear, but something reaches
the ears of the audience, our ears; significant elements were
used in the space, in the background of the action, such as steel,
felt, canvas- bound frames to symbolise support for paintings, gold
flakes and honey on the face, the dead hare with protruding ears.
On the right side covered by the colourful squares, the right half
(the vertical strip) is a repeated, composed frame from the film
Woman in Berlin, together with a text relating to this film: A TEXT
COMBINING THE NAZI WOMEN STRATEGY IN BERLIN CAPTU-
RED BY THE RUSSIAN (Против войны! Против Фашизма!), AND
THE FäBERBöCK'S DIRECTING STRATEGY, OR NO MAN WILL
EVER TOUCH AS AGAIN.

The fact that the artist's association is unpleasant, should

opresji w swoich rolach w polityce. Z jakiegoÊ powodu
matczynoÊç czy organicznoÊç tych politycznych kobiecoÊci staje si´

in the vegetative nature, in the nature of Europe's dying body, but
also in the body of the landscape, in the staffage, in the roots, in the
stubble, in the bark, and in the leaves. Two women in nature:
Theresa May and Angela Merkel, who, according to my/our limited
knowledge, may appear together under this hashtag probably
(exclusively) in a political context, although the double political
dimension of the argument built from women's position* (which
can be no other than political in nature) is all the more visible
in the world dominated by politically active contempt and violence.
The argument of being a woman is political itself, here additionally
reinforced by the context of them being political figures, in some
sense tormented or tired, oppressed by their roles in politics.
For some reason, the maternal or organic nature of this political
femininity becomes visible in the way the landscape is treated
in the painting, the face of Theresa in a black uniform resembles
roots, bark and leaves, while the face of Angela dressed in a grey
uniform resembles grain and stubble; and above us, the sky and
something atmospheric, as writes one of us, the struggling
painters.
* Does a similar thing happen when a philosophical argument
is presented from a woman's position? It is political, and immediately
becomes philosophical as soon as those things appear:
sources, ways, thinking, and the presentation of the argument.
— Two women…
two forms, black and grey, the faces supposed to refer to the
woodcut structure (German expressionism of the 1920s), the blurred
background, the rim. While repainting and cooling the background,
I remembered that when I first came across #metoo,
I unknowingly read it as #meteo. There must have been something
atmospheric or moist in this background.

By using intelligence as a new material for art, in the image of felt,
fat, copper, honey, and by being able to control the intelligence
of all America (also the intelligence of the coyote as the sacred
American animal), Beuys masters all America social-reality as part
of its cultural capital. Through controlling America's intelligence, his work
with the coyote* (the social-reality of the Coyote trapped in one
space with Beuys and denied its cultural capital) carried out in North
America will also, symbolically and realistically, include the
coyote and its cultural capital (the sacred animal of Indians,
despised by invaders from the moment they take control of his
and America's intelligence, considers his imprisonment with Beuys
to be right).
* The repetition of scenes with Beuys and Coyote means that we
have two dogs in the picture who look just like my and Ma∏gosia's
puppies – Georgia and Greece.
Another layer applied: Brownie the Giraffe* with deer horns from
several of my paintings, that is the Dead Giraffe Brownie as a living
idea of the conflict in the Gaza Strip; the giraffe horns as an idea
– deer horns as an ideology.
* Scared by explosions during the Arab Uprising – Intifada, Brownie
hit his head against an iron beam in the ZOO in Qalqiliya in the
West Bank and died on the spot. It was stuffed and shown on documenta
12 by German artist Peter Friedl.
— DoppelBeyus…

— Replica…
It was a good decision to return to this particular phase of the
painting Kuda Gierman featured in the picture together with
the painters. In this way, everyone – the painting and the painters
– could move from the past to the present. When it comes to painting,
surgeries on time have every chance of success. Because
Gruppa's painting was created in Germany, and our replica
sucked in the current German affairs, our surgery on space was
also successful. It is in time and space that the only matter known
to us, Baryonic matter (kuda baryon?), can be encountered.

Our painting Replica is (Our) Kuda Gierman, measuring 4x4 m,
made as a reference to the painting Kuda Gierman painted jointly
by Gruppa (six friends) in 1987 at Group Art Work in Hall K-18
in Kassel. Our Kassel work went missing, perhaps our effort serves
to preserve the basic issue: the lost painting. The painting
scene was painted first, with a red layer*. Our work in Kassel
lasted about a week. Every day, we would do things around the
6x6 m painting, placed in front of a large table with food and
drink, at which we sat, looking hour after hour at the result of our
painting. We hosted members of artistic groups from around the
world. There were foods, drinks and conversations by the table.
* The decision to finish the painting, to paint it red, was made
by three out of six friends from Gruppa: Modzelewski, Sobczyk,
Woêniak.
The question Kuda Gierman? is a question posed by Gruppa in
reference to art, but it's also a question about us – those who
follow the Germans closely, becoming somewhat civilized step by
step, always 'one step behind'. Politics, our attitude towards the
economy, towards every kind of freedom, towards an absolute
(probably non-existent) freedom, and civic freedoms, towards the
presence-absence of migrants, towards Russia (expressed by our
attitude towards Cyrillic), towards the Polish-German affairs, but
also towards the question of starting political parties modelled
on AfD and Aufstehen.

Capital=Resources (but also Kapitalismus ist Kapital: capitalism
is capital). The resources of the ms2 collection in ¸ódê, a gift from
Joseph Beuys to the museum in 1981, Polentransport* taken out
from the chest that the deposit arrived in, individual pieces exposed
in the exhibition space, for example, in the 'Capital' section,
for example, in the 'Revolution' section. The chest itself is put
on the floor. There is also a poster hanging on the wall just next
to the chest: We are a Revolution (La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi) from
1972. The photo that inspired us to do this painting depicts a leg
belonging to Sonia watching the exhibition, of Sonia the spectator,
her leg pointing to the future, direction Polentransport.
* Joseph Beuys: Art=Capital; Art=Revolution; Art=Me.
In a way, this relates to our (mine – yours) social-reality. However,
it may turn out that Beuys' 'Me' will appropriate the whole area.
What we get is: Me=Art=Capital=Revolution=Me, only when
Beuys formulates it, everyone can be an artist on the terms that
he defines, treating the indicated-everyone as an organic ready-
-made, a seed to be further put into work – to be processed.
Seeing the man-seed, Beuys states: as soon as I see a man,
I immediately know what question he wants* to ask.
* But also may.

chest, leg, light, sifted through 1. photo, 2. printout. What is it about
the tempera that makes the image remain reliable even after the
sifting? The luminous intensity of the paint, which makes the painter
follow it rather than paint with it.

Dyl Ulenspegel [Ludowy bohater ekstremalnie dos∏ownie
wykonuje polecenia], 2020, 200x140 cm, tempera jajowa na
p∏ótnie
W´drówka po Interiorze, zaw´drowaliÊmy w kilka miejsc; zadajàc
pytanie Kuda Gierman?, poznajemy okolice i bohaterów
ludowych* w rodzaju Dyla Sowizdrza∏a (Dyla Ulenspegela / Tila
Eulenspiegela). To bohaterowie odwracajàcy kota ogonem, ale
te˝ bioràcy w posiadanie wa˝nà cz´Êç naszego wyobra˝enia o sobie:
sobie siebie. Mo˝e dobrym przyk∏adem jest film Herberta
Êmierci wobec màdroÊci – Chrystusa i Dyla Ulenspegela. Na
naszym obrazie (zbyt) dos∏owne wype∏nianie wyobra˝eƒ ludu
przez Dyla skutkuje wytworzeniem figury opacznej, ludowego
wspó∏czesnego bohatera, jakim jest superbohater Blitzsoldat
stworzony w duchu narodu, noszàcy odpowiednie imi´ i kolory
kosmicznego stroju.
* Bohaterów równie generalnych jak Chrystus, zarazem równie
generalnie odwracajàcych kota ogonem. Czary i magia gdzieÊ
zoroastryzmu Êcieraniem si´ dobra – z∏a, s∏oƒca – ciemnoÊci,
i doktrynà jedynego boga, ale wyst´pujàcego w licznych wcieleniach,
stàd wyst´pujàce w filmie przekszta∏cenia Chrystusa
w zmiennocieplne gady i p∏azy** (gdy schodzi jako On z Krzy˝a
jako Wà˝; gdy ˝aby trzy sà poprzywiàzywane do trzech krzy˝y).
** To cz´Êciowo wyjaÊnia chodzenie po wodzie i po∏ykanie ofiar
(ofiary) w ca∏oÊci.
Dyl Ulenspegel [People’s Hero Follows Orders Extremely
Literally], 2020, 200x140 cm, egg tempera on canvas
As we wandered around the Interior, we visited several places
to ask our question Kuda Gierman. We discover places and folk
figures* such as Dyl Ulenspegel / Till Eulenspiegel. They twist
everything around, but also take into possession an important
part of our image about ourselves: the ourselves. Perhaps Das
Gespenst, a film by Herbert Achternbusch, could be a good
example. It explores the phenomenon of combining the figure
of Christ and Dyl Ulenspegel (but also their wisdom towards death
or their death towards wisdom). By trying to (extremally) literally
embody people's ideas about him, our Dyl Ulenspegel turns into
a caricature, a people's modern hero, such as Blitzsoldat, a hero
for people, carrying the right name and wearing a space outfit
in the right colours.
47
* Heroes as general as Christ, who are just as general at twisting
everything around. Spells and magic watched by the director and
discovered in folk tradition are, just like Christianity, steeped in the
Zoroastrian clash of good and evil, sun and darkness, and the doctrine
of the only god but in numerous incarnations, hence the
transformation of Achternbusch's Christ into cold-blooded reptiles
and amphibians** (when He descends from the Cross as a Serpent;
when frogs three are attached to three crosses).
** This partially explains walking on the water and swallowing the
victims (sacrifice) in whole.

Nasza Guernica, 2019, 350x770 cm, tempera jajowa na papierze
— Nasza Guernica…
zosta∏a namalowana na papierze pakowym prà˝kowanym, z rolki,
takim, jaki kupiliÊmy sobie w 1984 roku w Düsseldorfie. GdybyÊmy
zapytali wtedy: Kuda Gierman? Oo, daleko, daleko… a teraz
prosz´: zamawiasz, p∏acisz i masz, z dowozem: Gierman zdies’.
Trzy pasy papieru trzeba skleiç, i prosz´! Nadchodzi niezwyk∏a koniunkcja:
S∏oƒce, Saturn, Pluton, Ceres, plus cz´Êciowe zaçmienie
Ksi´˝yca i spotykam u dentysty koleg´, konserwatora papieru,
sensie okreÊla to pewne podzia∏y kompozycji, jakie ostatecznie nasz
kompozycji propagandowej, monumentalnej*, realizowanej w stylistyce
dwu-, trzybarwnego sgraffita, kompozycji, w której rzeczy
* My równie˝ nie rezygnujemy z efektu propagandowego i monumentalnych
Êrodków.
Our Guernica, 2019, 350x770 cm, egg tempera on paper
— Our Guernica…
was painted on ribbed kraft paper, the one we bought in 1984
in Düsseldorf. If we had asked ourselves back then: Kuda Gierman?
Far, far away... and now here you are: you order, you pay and you
have it delivered: Gierman zdies’. You glue together three strips of paper,
and here you are! An unusual conjunction is coming: The Sun,
Saturn, Pluto, Ceres, along with a partial lunar eclipse, and I am
meeting a friend at my dentist's, the paper conservator who glued
the Wróblewski for us! He explains how to glue things properly.
Painting as a tribute: we paint a colourful Guernica on a sheet
of paper in its own dimensions 350x770 cm, we do it in the rooms
of the Poznaƒ Castle (not too big, by the way). Our assigned studio
does not have a single wall high and wide enough to paint
Our Guernica, so we split it into three parts and fit each of them
on the wall provided. In a way, it helps us to define the composition
that our paper eventually obtains; the composition of Our
Guernica. Our work is a tribute to painting, but also to the propaganda
monumentalism and to volatility; the volatility that may
happen and actually happens to Our Guernica. What the picture
actually depicts seems less relevant, for it depicts Guernica, the original
drawing by Pablo Picasso, with its surface or its form, its breakdown
or its shapes. What matters more is how we approached
it, how we paint it without giving up the colour that Picasso almost
rejected in his propaganda, monumental composition* painted
with a two- or three-coloured sgraffito, a composition where
things distant from each other are painted in a similar way, while
in our interpretation things close to each other are painted very
differently.
* We do not give up the propaganda effect and monumental
means either.

Rynek moralno-etycznie weryfikuje artyst´. Artysta zostaje zweryfikowany
moralno-etycznie, wyceniony przez rynek. Rozmowa prowadzona
obrazie. Jest to struktura graficzna Kuda das Bild? zaprojektowana
czy ukazana w typie propagandowego opracowania komunikatu:
w malarstwie na równi traktujemy wartoÊci formalne i moralno-
-etyczne, nast´pnie wszystko to poddajemy ocenie i oszacowaniu
* To malarstwo z poprzedzajàcego poprzedzajàce nas pokolenie;
Ogólnopolska Wystawa M∏odej Plastyki „Przeciw wojnie – przeciw
1955 to rok naszego urodzenia.
Kuda das Bild?, 2020, 200x200 cm, egg tempera on canvas
— Professor Sempoliƒski used to visit the Academy store to buy
canvas (support). He would come dressed in a long, grey coat and
quilted snow boots (Relaksy). Professor Juszczak understood the
secret meanings of the depth of the caves which strikes fear into
the hearts of people painting there. You can't enter any further.
The market verifies the morality and ethics of an artist. An artist
is verified morally and ethically, priced by the market. A conversation
carried on through the painting is the conversation about
this painting in order to grasp the phenomenon of painting and
understand whether the market should necessarily confirm it: where
is a painting, where is the estimated price of a painting? What
touches upon Sem's painting, and also impacts Jusz's thinking
about it, is the graphic structure of Kuda das Bild? designed to resemble
a propaganda message: the formal, moral and ethical
values of painting are treated equally, then everything is evaluated
and estimated through the morally and ethically supported
verdict combined with the aesthetics developed to satisfy the
needs of the art market.
* This painting belongs to the generation previous to the previous
to us generation. The Polish Young Art Exhibition 'Against the war,
against fascism' known as the 1955 'Arsenal' exhibition is probably
a dividing line to which our considerations can be referred;
1955 is the year of our birth.
