Krousonas
Under the lofty gaze of Psiloritis, another symbol of the indomitable Cretan
soul is the legendary Krousonas that continues its historic march. The virginity
of the landscape is kept pure; the customs remain unchanged from the moment
of their inception.
The picturesque village of Krousonas is located at the eastern foot of the
famous Psiloritis within 21 km from Heraklion. The name of the village was
according to one version the name Krousons that existed in ancient times. Another
version says that the races between the ancient inhabitants the Curetes
took place in that region. During the races the sounds of the weapons and
shields were strong, so it gave a name for the area Krousonas. Another version
says that Krousonas was the place of the meeting for pirates.
The locals are mainly engaged in the vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees, and
the goat herders. It is noteworthy that in Krousonas plateau at an altitude of
1200 meters, 300,000 pear and apple trees are cultivated. Recently it has
begun to develop tourism prioritizing at mild tourism.
The village has a nice square with an oak tree which has been declared a protected
monument of nature. This centenarian oak has peculiar botanical value
associated with the historical events of the region. Several traditional taverns
operate in the village where you can taste delicious dishes of pure products
such as meats and dairy, vegetables, fruit and excellent wine in the Cretan
mountains.
The Women’s Cooperative operates in Krousonas, which produces a wide variety
of bakery and confectionery products using local materials and traditional
local recipes.
The important monuments and antiquities have been discovered in the surrounding
area of the Municipality Krousonas. The main position takes the
geometric and archaic settlement of Krousonas that was discovered in part,
by the authorities in 80s. This settlement is one of the important sites of this
period in Malevizi. The Minoan settlement at Rizoplagies is located at the foot
of Gournous that was revealed at the same time.
With starting point of Krousonas, you can visit many interesting places:
Gorge Gaidourorachis
It is located 3km west of Krousonas and crosses Psiloreitis.
It starts from the ancient Zominthos, near Anogia Kitharida
and ends at the village, near the Krousonas. The canyon
is quite wild and impressive. It hosts a large number of
birds and animals. It is believed that from Gaidourorachis,
the ancient Minoans came in the holy Zominthos and Ideon
Andron, as they have found the signs of the ancient street.
Plateau Meadow of Krousonas
The plateau is located 9km west of Krousonas on the
eastern slopes of Psiloreitsi. It is a beautiful place to visit
for someone especially in spring, when 300,000 pear and
apple trees are blooming. The lush tranquil plateau with a
backdrop of bare peaks of Psiloreitis is a unique landscape.
Cave Sarchos
It is one of the largest and most important caves of
Crete, which is especially popular among cavers due to
its complexity and the large length. The cave is a place
of residence for three important species of bats in Crete.
Besides, many call it a bat cave.
