Morozini Fountain
The Fontana Morosini is in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square in the
center of Heraklion, but the inhabitants of the city never use the
official name, usually referring to it as the Lions Square or the
Lions for short. The ornate Venetian fountain features four lions
with water gushing from their mouths and is works of the Provveditore
Generale (Superintendent) Francesco Morosini. The
fountain was constructed in 1628 not for aesthetic purposes but
to bring unlimited drinking water to thirsty Heraklion. Heraklion
had no springs, and its inhabitants used wells and rainwater cisterns.
The lobes of the fountain are decorated with scenes from
Greek mythology carved in relief, mainly Tritons, dolphins and
nymphs, mythical water beings. At the center of each lobe were
the coats of arms of the Doge, the Duke, the Councilors and Morosini
himself.
Loggia
The elegant building of the Loggia is one of the finest
monuments of Venetian Crete. The Loggia (noblemen’s
club) now standing in Heraklion was constructed
in 1626-28 by Francesco Morosini. This is
the fourth and final Loggia built during the period
of Venetian rule. Very little information is available
on the first three, so we do not really know what
they looked like. Venetian political and social customs
demanded the construction of a public building
in Heraklion, as a meeting-place for the nobles,
rulers and feudal lords, where economic and commercial
decisions were made. It was also a place
for them to relax, something like an officers’ mess
today.
