Q&A
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO
START YOUR NEW BREWERY?
I was travelling in the USA when
the craft-beer revolution was
taking off there and I worked in
two craft breweries. On my return
to SA, I started home-brewing;
and, then, a suring accident,
three years ago, gave me the time
to plan my dream brewery.
WHY CAPE ST. FRANCIS?
My family loves to surf and the
waves are really good here.
YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE OF
BEER? That’s a tough question –
there are so many delicious styles.
My all-time favourite is an IPA in
the US West Coast-style, loaded
with hops. Nothing is as relaxing
as a hoppy beer and I love the
aroma and taste.
WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION
BEHIND THE NAMES OF EACH
BEER? Beach Blonde is like
a surfer girl – natural, light-hearted
and refreshing. Lighthouse Ale is
an honest beer you can rely on,
inspired by the Cape St. Francis
lighthouse. Wildside IPA is an
unrestrained celebration of hops,
untamed like our rugged coastline.
Storm Rider Stout is the perfect
storm in a glass, inspired by
the winter storms that bring us
good waves.
This collection is perfect for
those who appreciate the
simplicity of design and the
sophistication of superior
quality. Speciically produced
for Bisquit Cognac, the products
represent the time-honoured
heritage and handcrafted
technique of both brands.
XXALELAGER
We all know about wine geeks, but now I have discovered a new kind –
the beer geeks! And rightfully so, as, with the rise of craft beer, a whole
new range of beer is emerging. So, what is the main difference between
ale and lager? The fermentation and especially the type of yeast. Here
is a summary:
ALE
Thousands of years old process
Fermented warm
Top fermentation
Small brewing cycle: few days
LAGER
Quite recent process
Fermented cold
Bottom fermentation
Long brewing cycle: several months
WATERKLOOF’S
SERIOUSLY COOL DUO
Right on trend, Waterkloof, famous
for their naturally made wine, has just
released this seriously cool duo –
a cinsault and chenin blanc, both from
some of the oldest bush vines in the
Heidelberg. They advise us to serve
these wines neither cold nor warm, but
cool. Cinsault, R120, chenin blanc, R95;
at select liquor retailers nationwide
