confirmed similar studies in the conclusion, that
the public in general has a rather positive attitude
to hunting, as long as it is performed in a controlled
and sustainable way.
An important element in the research has been
detailed studies of potential conflicts between
increasing populations of deer and forestry. Practical
field experiments were carried out during
the program period and showed that a right combination
of tree species planting, establishment
techniques, repelling programs including dynamic
fencing limited in time and space and not least
the sowing of alternative food crops for the deer
makes it possible to combine forestry with well
managed and healthy wildlife populations. In this
connection new results have been achieved concerning
deer as valuable grazers in the maintaining
of open forests and landscapes.
Many interests are connected to wildlife management,
landscape and nature conservation.
The program has shown that there is no simple
formula to fulfill all wishes. Pros and cons must be
weighed. There will be winners and losers. In this
balance, knowledge seems to be crucial. Wildlife
& Landscape has generated a new platform and
presents valuable evidence, just as the program
has drawn attention to new fields of research
which will be necessary for the future management.
As to the basic question of how to reverse
the degradation of farmland wildlife and biodiversity,
it appears obvious that there is no simple solution.
Much can be done in the single district, but
in the end, regional and national strategies must
secure the needed management through space
and time.
