To test if architectural expertise modulates brain activity associated with making an aesthetic judgment of buildings we employed a 1 st order parametric regression analysis using the subject-specific orthogonalized behavioral responses by modeling four group-by-stimulus regressors. We first identified brain areas that scaled linearly with preference for buildings in architects and non-architects (see Figure 2) and then compared the two groups. We next investigated the control stimuli (faces) in order to identify potential brain activity for which the difference between the responses to face stimuli varied across the two groups of subjects. As noted, if there is no difference associated with the assessment of the aesthetic value of the faces, at the same time as there is a difference in the assessment of the value of the buildings, this is prima facie support for the expertise hypothesis. As with the building stimuli, we looked for brain areas that scaled linearly with preference for face stimuli by subtracting architects from non-architects and the converse subtraction, non-architects from architects, but here we found no significant difference for any of the subtractions (p
