Authors: Stine Ehmsen Roager and Karina Dahl Andersen Institution of publication: Midwifery – University College Syddanmark, Esbjerg Date: The 3 rd of June 2013 Background: Since 2006, screening for fetal anomalies has been an offer to all women in Denmark. This has increased the number of permissions to late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly, which means that more women experience this. The experience of a late termination of pregnancy, can cause psychological reactions and emotions of loss and grief. This is the reason why we find it relevant to focus on women’s experiences of going through late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly. Objective: How do women experience going through late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly? How can the midwife, with these experiences in mind and with a narrative approach, support the woman in achieving a whole narrative. Method: The objective will be investigated with a qualitative approach, and a phenomenological and hermeneutical basis. We will use a qualitative analysis of English narrative interviews, available on the database www.healhtalkonline.org (DIPEx 2013), as the primary empirical data. This will be used, along with Cheryl Mattinglys theory on narratives, in an analysis of the objective. As case material we include quotations from our own narrative interviews. The results from the analysis will be discussed. 3

Et bachelorprojekt om narrativitet og provokerede sene aborter Conclusion: Going through late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly is an individual experience. The analytical common features of the experiences can provide an understanding of the phenomenon “women’s experiences of going through a late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomalies”. One thing that women have in common is that the late termination of pregnancy has caused a disruption of their narrative. Redefining the plot, actions towards the plot through particular actions and choices, and also attribution of meaning and coherence to what is understandable, are elements in achieving a whole narrative and healing from illness. With knowledge of the above mentioned and with a narrative approach the midwife can support the woman who experience going through late termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly.
