Children’s RightsIn Denmark, the law provides children with certainrights. Denmark has acceded to the United Nationsconvention on the rights of children. Thisconvention’s aim is the prevention of child abuse -for example: severe beating, being locked up, tiedup or abandoned.In Denmark it is forbidden to hit one’s children.In Denmark, the circumcision of girls is a criminaloffence, even if it occurs during a visit to one’snative country.Under Danish law, anyone knowing that a child isbeing beaten or otherwise abused by its parents –or if a girl has been circumcised – is required toinform the social services.Although living in a new country, one has a right touse one’s own language and to consideration forone’s culture and religious beliefs. This is alsowritten down in the UN convention on the rights ofchildren.Barnets rettighederI Danmark har børn visse lovgivne rettigheder. Danmark harskrevet under på FN’s konvention om barnets rettigheder,som har til formål at forhindre overgreb mod børn. Fx atde bliver slået voldsomt, lukket inde, bundet eller efterladtalene.I Danmark er det forbudt at slå sine børnI Danmark er det strafbart at få omskåret piger, også selvomdet foregår ved besøg i hjemlandet.Efter dansk lov har alle pligt til at underrette de socialemyndigheder, hvis de ved, et barn bliver slået eller på andenmåde svigtes af sine forældre – eller hvis en pige er blevetomskåret.Selvom man bor i et nyt land, har man ret til at bruge siteget sprog og til at have sin egen kultur og religion. Det stårogså i FN’s konvention om barnets rettigheder.40
