Mitgliederversammlung / General Meeting 19 - 20 September 2008 in Lübeck
Thank you for officially admitting the A.F.F, Association
Française des Formistes, to the European Diemakers
Association.
Just like my about twenty colleagues who are taking
part in this adventure I am convinced of the changes in
our profession.
In the course of one generation our companies which
often were craft businesses have changed to become
small and medium sized industrial enterprises by means
of high financial investments. It has been good and also
necessary to answer this far-reaching change of our environment
with an expansion of our national economy
first to Europe and then to the world market. As a consequence
we are forced to fundamentally change our
views in order to find a way out of our traditional niche.
Our members’ need to get out of this isolation and to
see whether others are worried about the same things
and to share these worries are the right to exist of associations
like ours, no matter where.
Even though our association has not yet existed for a
long time we know how difficult it is to set a meeting
going with attractive subjects suitable for interesting
and motivating our members and calling upon those not
present to take part. In our search for subjects we have
tried to understand the reasons of those not wanting to
join us. Actually, they are often close to those only coming
tentatively to watch and listen because they do not
know what to expect, how they might benefit from it,
how they could contribute … Everything still has to be
built up and we still have to make the experiences you
already have.
The use to be expected and what has to be done for it,
that is the big question to which we quickly have to find
an answer. There is a high necessity to standardize the
raw material components in study groups. Another of
our tasks is to gather the profession of diemakers and
their suppliers at the Technology Forum in a place like
Luxemburg (an exceptional event in everyone’s opinion).
In addition to this it is important to ameliorate the reputation,
the image, of our profession and of all specialists
daily producing dies.
Without being immodest, our products as plain as they
may be are technical products! Their performance also
mutually depends on the press, its state, its operator,
the material to be machined etc. which makes practising
our profession even more complex. Despite all further
developments of machines and the materials to be
machined: A die is on no account going to become an
unchanged standard product or commodity good.
Therefore, I firmly believe that in order to gather the highest
possible number of colleagues in our associations,
the upgrading and defense of our profession necessarily
has got to be effected through the appreciation of our
technical know-how in the field of the diemaking and
packaging industry.

Mes chers confrères.
Merci d’accueillir officiellement l’A.F.F, association Française
des Formistes.
Je suis convaincu, tout comme la vingtaine de confrères
qui participent à cette aventure de la mutation de notre
métier. Nos entreprises très souvent artisanales se sont
transformées le temps d’une génération en P.M.E industrielles
à forte mobilisation capitalistique.
Et si notre vie de chef d’entreprise s’est modifiée ainsi,
c’est bien pour répondre à la mutation de notre environnement
avec l’élargissement de nos économies d’abord
sur le terrain européen, puis mondiale, avec pour conséquence
le bouleversement de notre niche traditionaliste.
Le besoin de nos adhérents de sortir de leur isolement,
de regarder si les préoccupations des autres sont les
mêmes et de les partager sont des raisons d`être de
l’existence d’association comme les nôtres, peu importe
le pays.
Malgré notre peu d’antériorité, nous savons combien il
est difficile d’animer une réunion avec des sujets attractifs
et susceptibles d’intéresser et motiver nos adhérents
et d’interpeller les absents. Dans notre quête de sujets,
nous avons tenté de comprendre les raisons de ceux ne
voulant pas nous rejoindre. Elles sont en faite souvent
proches de ceux qui viennent voir, mais à l’essai car ils
ne savent pas vraiment ce qu’ils attendent, ce qu’ils
peuvent en tirer, ce qu’ils peuvent apporter…. Tout est à
construire et nous avons besoin de nous rapprocher de
votre expérience.
C’est la grande question à laquelle nous devons apporter
une réponse rapidement, car au-delà de la nécessité
de standardiser les composants matière première,
réunir en un lieu comme Luxembourg la profession de la
forme (manifestation exceptionnelle de l’avis de tous) il
est important de rendre ses lettres de noblesse à notre
métier et aux professionnels qui l’exercent.
Nos fabrications si modestes soient elles, sont des
produits techniques interdépendants de facteurs tels
que (presse, état de celle-ci, conducteur presse, matière
travaillée etc.) ce qui rend l’exercice de notre métier
encore plus complexe, mais n’en fait en aucun cas un
produit standard et consommable tel quel.
Je crois donc fortement que pour fédérer le plus grand
nombre de collègues dans nos associations, la mise en
valeur et la défense de notre métier passe nécessairement
par la reconnaissance de nos savoirs faire par le
monde des arts graphiques.
