sprünge (‚Kramer jumps‘) and the ‚Free Fall’ into the valley – that’s
a unique pleasure not many skiing resorts can offer.
L.L. ⁄ World Cup races and other big events take place in Garmisch-
Partenkirchen regularly. Do races at home make you especially
nervous?
F.N. ⁄ Of course, at the beginning you tell yourself it’s like any other
race. But that’s just a way of distracting oneself from the special task
at hand. And of course the media make it clear that a race at home
is focused on a lot more. And then, when you have old friends and
acquaintances call out to you during the inspection of the slope, you
know how much it means. Of course you still can’t let yourself get
distracted; you have to focus on your performance alone.
L.L. ⁄ What does your summer training program look like?
F.N. ⁄ Alpine racing means traveling. Even as a child and student one
always has to ‘follow’ the snow. We train all through the year which
means that we have to look for places where we can train on the snow
all over the world. That’s a lot of travelling and very time consuming.
Especially for newcomers who still go to school the problem
of combining sports and school is extremely challenging. You can
say that as an alpine ski racer one has to train all year through in
order to be able to keep up. Shortly after the long World Cup season
we already have material tests. After a short break of 1 – 2 weeks
the fitness units start again. Ski sports is very complex, apart from
stamina and strength training there also are coordinative challenges
we have to meet and which we have to specially train for.
L.L. ⁄ Keyword „Felix Neureuther Ski Academy“: What do your
courses focus on?
F.N. ⁄ It’s all about our special training content ‚Ski4Life‘, a holistic
training program that does not just foster coordination of movement
but also perception. This means that special coordinative exercises
are introduced into the children’s training program. This kind of
exercises is part of the fixed training program of every one of the
more challenging types of sports by now. And depending on training
goal and age we use it for kids, too. What’s natural for us is that the
groups we practice in are very small because that’s the only way to
learn fast.
