L.L. ⁄ What would you say makes a successful handover of a business?<br />
A.W. ⁄ Well that it works out – despite the difficulties that arise because of<br />
the differences in between the generations – and that one gets the impression<br />
everything will continue to work out just fine.<br />
L.L. ⁄ Looking back to your time as boss of the hotel: what are you particularly<br />
proud of?<br />
A.W. ⁄ There’s nothing I’m particularly proud of, apart from the fact that<br />
Gerda and I lead the Hospiz for nearly 50 years and that we invested the<br />
money that we earned over and over.<br />
L.L. ⁄ With the Hospiz you coined tourism around the <strong>Arlberg</strong> for nearly<br />
50 years. What would you say was the biggest change that took place in the<br />
past decades, which development surprised you the most?<br />
A.W. ⁄ Well the biggest change certainly was the great increase in beds.<br />
About 50 years ago there were a total of 6,000 beds around the <strong>Arlberg</strong>,<br />
today there are 22,000. Of course that means that competition has<br />
increased, too. What surprises me most is the guests’ holiday habits. Our<br />
long standing guests used to book their Christmas, February and Easter<br />
holidays. Today people travel at much shorter notice; they go on holiday<br />
more often but stay for shorter periods of time when they do.<br />
L.L. ⁄ ‚In winter the Hospiz and the <strong>Arlberg</strong> in general have reached a level<br />
of quality that’s hard to beat. The big challenge is to improve the rest of the<br />
year’ is what your son Florian said in last year’s La Loupe interview.<br />
What are your thoughts on this?<br />
A.W. ⁄ From my point of view the challenge lies in keeping up the quality<br />
standards. The season is certainly going to become longer but keeping the<br />
Hospiz and other places around the <strong>Arlberg</strong> open all year round is wishful<br />
thinking, if you ask me, I don’t think that’s going to happen.<br />

L.L. ⁄ Your wine cellar contains one of the world’s biggest collections of wines<br />
in large bottles – up to the Melchior-bottles that hold 18 litres. When was<br />
the last time you opened one of those?<br />
A.W. ⁄ We had a wedding two weeks ago where we opened three of them. We<br />
mostly need those kinds of bottles at birthdays, weddings and similar events,<br />
or when we have 15 to 20 persons from our circle of friends over. Every<br />
year we open between 150 and 160 bottles.
