There is a vast number of medieval hilltop
castles to discover on the Rhine side. Why
not visiting the summer residence of King
Ludwig I of Bavaria who built this romantic
summer palace high above the villages
of Edenkoben and Rhodt an der Weinstraße.
You can admire the early works of Max Slevogt,
the German impressionist painter and
illustrator, in the gallery on the top floor or
visit one of the concerts for classical music
in the King’s ornate dining room. The villa is
surrounded by a shady courtyard, the garden
found by King Ludwig as “all the land
around, as far as the eye can see, is a vast
garden”: At the foot of the Haardtberge, surrounded
by vineyards, lies one of the most
beauftiful historic wine villages, St. Martin.
A climatic health resort and the only winegrowing
location in Germany that is named
after the patron Saint of vintners. Each year
the statue of the saint is passed on to another
winery. A wide range of restaurants and
romantic pubs are to be found alongside
winding alleys, a paradise for gourmets, offering
regional cuisine such as the legendary
Palatine bratwurst, liver dumplings, meat
balls, hand cheese - not to forget the culinary
cliché which has the charming name of
Saumagen, a stuffed pig’s stomach. As it is
unthinkable for Palatinians to enjoy a meal
without any wine, Saumagen is best accompanied
by a hearty Riesling or dry Silvaner.
