4. Tire air pressure
The manufacturer’s recommended tire air pressure can be found on the side of the
tire.
If you do not have a gauge, press the tire with your thumb. The general rule is that
the pressure is right when you can push the surface of the tire in 1-3 mm for a
touring bicycle and 3-5 mm for a standard bicycle (Fig. 4).
A fully pumped, hard tire rolls more
easily. Figure 5 shows the correct
pumping grip. Place your thumb
against the rim so that the valve does
not move back and forth.
5. General inspection
Check the tightness of the screws and nuts. Check that the gears and brakes work.
6. Shifting gears
Bicycle with hub gears:
Select the desired gear using the gear shift lever on the handlebars. Shift gears while
the back wheel is in motion, but avoid pedaling with too much force.
Bicycle with derailleur gears:
The gear shift lever on the left is used to change the front gears and the one on the
right is used to change the back gears. Shift gears while pedaling lightly; the chain
must be in motion. Never pedal backwards while shifting! Avoid using the extreme
positions of the gears (Fig. 6), this way you avoid premature wearing of the chain
and sprockets.
If you use a gear which is too high for the riding
conditions, you may wear yourself out quickly.
Always choose a gear that is suitable to the
terrain and to your condition, so that it feels easy
to pedal. The recommended pedaling speed for
the average cyclist is one rotation per second, 80
rotations per minute when riding fast. Separate
instructions are included with the bike for the
different gear shift systems.
