HOTEL 2.0. Ein Hotel ist laut Internet-Enzyklopädie „ein Beherbergungs-
und Verpflegungsbetrieb für Gäste gegen Bezahlung“. So mancher
All das
selbstverständlich unter dem Siegel der Nachhaltigkeit. Keine Frage: Die
According to the Internet encyclopedia, “A hotel is an establishment that provides
lodging paid on a short-term basis.“ Many hoteliers nowadays will sigh
at this and say, “If only things were that simple!“ Whereas in the 1950’s a clean
room and a frugal breakfast (“Tea or coffee?“) might have been the acceptable
standard, in the 21st century a hotel must offer more than just room and board.
Much more, because today’s potential guests are much more demanding; but
also, with Internet forums and social media communities at their disposal, they
are now also able to make direct comparisons to see where their demands
will best be met. They expect a room that is new or that has at least been recently
renovated; interiors should be up to international standards and present
a touch of local color; the restaurant should be pure magic, with an awardwinning
chef as magician; at the breakfast buffet, they expect the proverbial
cornucopia, every morning fresh; and the wellness zone should be an oasis of
relaxation where medical service is offered as well. And of course, all of this under
the seal of sustainability. There’s no question that the hotel industry has
risen to new heights as far as services are concerned.
As delightful as all this may be for us guests, there’s one thing we must not forget:
a heartfelt welcome and genuine hospitality often remain for us, personally,
the most important criteria. These too can easily be evaluated and compared,
on the condition that an appropriate platform is provided. I would therefore like
to invite you, once again, to come along with us and evaluate hotels according
to the criteria of our tried and tested categories: friendship, ambiente, gourmet,
future and wellness. Because, as you will read in the current issue, it is not the
stars alone that guarantee a heavenly hotel experience. You will find our choice
of the 500 most exciting hotels for the year 2015/2016 beginning on page 177.
Two continents, two cities: Chicago, the impressive American metropolis on
Lake Michigan, and Palermo, the dark, Sicilian pearl on the Mediterranean. I’ve
been to both. In our “Revisited“ section you will find my photos and impressions
of both cities, so different from each other, and yet sharing something that lurks
in the shadows: the mafia.
In this issue we will also take you along to Sylt. This island in the North Sea,
a destination familiar to the “beautiful people“, is surrounded by legend and
myth and is known for its peculiarities – and not without reason, as author Silke
von Bremen has learned from experience, she, who was brought to the island
by love. You will find her amusing “Sylt - Instructions for Use“ on page 78.
In our guide this year, for the second time, we bring Swiss hotels into exclusive
focus: we list the 222 best hotels, beginning on page 212 – and also at
www.veryspecialhotels.com
By the way, we are, of course, also present online via Facebook, where every visitor
is welcome: www.facebook.com/pages/Hubertus-Hohenlohes-Hotelguide
So, dear readers, my editorial team joins me in wishing all of you plenty of pleasure
and excitement in your reading of this eleventh edition of “Hubertus von
Hohenlohe’s 500 Very Special Hotels“.
