In und um Gstaad herum muss sich niemand wundern, wenn Biker
entspannt oben am Hügel ankommen. Während wandernden Kollegen
schon mal der Schweiß über den Rücken rinnt, plaudern Fahrradfahrer
noch locker, wenn sie den Berg erklimmen. Denn Erschöpfung ist in
Gstaad nicht gefragt. Deshalb erfreuen sich Zweiräder, bei denen zusätzliche
Antriebskraft über einen austauschbaren Akku generiert werden
kann, großer Beliebtheit. Diese Elektrobikes, auch „Flyer Bikes“ genannt,
bieten sich für jeden Fahrrad-Fan an, der Hügel mit Eleganz bezwingen
will. Rund um den bekannten Touristenort im Berner Oberland gibt es
neun Elektrobike-Routen mit etlichen Akku-Tauschstationen.
Diese Variante sportlicher Betätigung passt zum gemäßigten Gstaad-
Besucher. Richtige Fahrrad-Freaks, verbissene Wettkämpfer mit roten
Köpfen, Amateursportler mit Doping-Ampullen – die will Gstaad nämlich
gar nicht haben. Dafür ist es zu gediegen, zu erhaben – und ja, auch
zu normal. Denn wer Gstaad mit Nobel-Urlaubsorten wie Zermatt oder
gar St. Moritz in einen Topf wirft, der tut dem Örtchen unrecht. „Gstaad
verstellt sich nicht, ist unverdorben und prickelnd zugleich“, sagt Ferdinand
T. Salverda, Direktor des Steigenberger Alpenhotel and Spa, „ich
bin dankbar, hier arbeiten zu dürfen.“ Filmstars wie Tony Curtis, Elizabeth
Taylor oder Roger Moore, der Fotograf und Playboy Gunter Sachs
oder der Star-Geiger und Dirigent Yehudi Menuhin erholten sich regelmäßig
hier. Noch heute haben Regisseur Roman Polanski, Formel-1-Boss
Bernie Ecclestone sowie Designer Valentino eine Bleibe in Gstaad. Pop-
Königin Madonna oder Schauspieler Sean Connery schöpfen Kraft im
Berg-Idyll und schlendern über die „Promenade“ zur Molkerei. All diese
Gesichter sind in Gstaad so normal wie Kühe beim Alpaufzug vor dem

sweat trickling down their backs. People in Gstaad do not like to wear
themselves out. This explains the popularity of electric bikes, which allow
cyclists to switch on additional, battery-generated propulsion. Also
called ‘Flyer Bikes’, they are a great choice for any cycling enthusiast, who
wants to conquer the inclines with any kind of elegance. Around the
world-famous tourist destination in the Bernese Highlands, there are
nine electric bike routes with a large number of battery exchange stations.
This kind of sporting activity fits in well with the laid-back nature of
the typical visitor to Gstaad. Hardcore cyclists, dogged athletes with
flushed faces, or amateur sportsmen carrying vials of performance enhancing
substances are not the kind of visitors Gstaad wants to attract.
It is too dignified and too gracious for that – and too down to earth.
Those who lump Gstaad together with ritzy holiday resorts like Zermat
or even St Moritz, really do the village a disservice. “Gstaad does not put
on an act. It is unspoilt and exhilarating at the same time,” says Ferdinand
Salverda, General Manager at the Steigenberger Hotel Gstaad. “I’m
really thankful to have the opportunity to work here.” Among those, who
used to unwind here regularly, were film stars like Tony Curtis, Elizabeth
Taylor and Roger Moore, but also the photographer and playboy Gunter
Sachs and conductor Yehudi Menuhin. To this day, director Roman Polanski,
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and designer Valentino own
residences in Gstaad. Pop queen Madonna and actor Sean Connery, too,
recharge their batteries in this mountain idyll, and stroll across the
‘Promenade’ to the dairy. Seeing all these famous faces is as commonplace
in Gstaad, as seeing cattle being driven up the mountain past the
Gucci store.
Everyone here will tell you the following charming story – those who
were born here and cannot tear themselves away; the new arrivals, who
have fallen in love with the mountainous landscape on the border with
the French-speaking parts of Switzerland; and the regular guests who
have been visiting the Saanenland region for decades. It is a myth according
to which God supported himself with one hand on the Bernese
mountains while creating the world. His fingers rested in the five tributary
valleys, which explains the unique beauty of the Saanenmöser-
