Dass ich als individuelle Persönlichkeit wahrgenommen werde.
Andererseits gibt es da diese „Aufdringlichkeits-Falle“ – wenn die Zuwendung
zu stark ist, kann sie genauso schlimm sein wie Missachtung.
Gibt es nicht auch Menschen, die aber genau das wollen, das Maximum
an Beachtung und Fürsorge?
Stimmt, es ist ein Balanceakt. Das ist ja gerade die Kunst in einem erstklassigen
Hotel: Ein präzises Gespür dafür zu entwickeln, was der Gast
möchte. Dazu gehört auch, mir zu verraten, wo der Hinterausgang ist,
an dem nicht zwanzig Fotografen auf einen warten.
Sind Sie experimentierfreudig, was Hotels angeht, oder lieber
Stammgast?
Ich bin, wenn ich richtig zufrieden bin, gern ein treuer Gast. Am liebsten
wäre mir natürlich, dann auch jedes Mal das vertraute Personal wiederzutreffen.
Aber das kann man ja nicht verlangen.
Verwöhnen Sie sich bei einer Privatreise, um den Luxus endlich mal
richtig nutzen zu können?
Das ist vorgekommen, ja. Ich gucke schon: Gibt es da einen schönen Spa,
wie ist das Restaurant, wie sieht die Bar aus?
Geben Sie dann auch Tipps an Freunde weiter?
Das tue ich gern. Lustig war, dass ich nach den „Commissario Brunetti“-
Filmen überall als der absolute Venedig-Experte galt. Dabei hatte ich da
immer eine Wohnung und konnte überhaupt kein Hotel empfehlen –
Restaurants dagegen schon.
Sind Sie eher ein Reisender, der spontan losfährt, oder wird alles
lange im Voraus geplant?
Früher bin ich öfter drauflosgefahren, gern auch mit dem Fahrrad. Dann
hatte ich mir eine Zeit gesetzt, etwa 17 Uhr, ab da habe ich geguckt, wo
ich für die Nacht unterkomme.
Hat das geklappt?
Nicht immer, nein. Es gab viele witzige Entdeckungen, aber auch echte
Katastrophen.
Gibt es mittlerweile noch Traumziele für Sie?
Nicht mehr ganz so viele. Aber ich möchte sehr gern noch mal in die
Arktis. Da habe ich vor 15 Jahren gedreht, und das beschäftigt mich
immer noch.
Wer entscheidet denn privat über das Reiseziel der Króls?
Ach, ich bin da nicht so kompliziert. Wenn ich nicht sofort überzeugt
werde, packt mich halt die Neugier, so nach dem Motto: Dann will ich
mir mal angucken, was du da ausgesucht hast.

No, no, I’m not that particular. Although, I have to admit that there have
been times when I have longed for the pillow I have at home. But in a
good hotel, you can usually ask for, and be given, a softer or firmer one.
What do you expect to find in your room – flowers, fruit or mineral
water?
Those are a nice touch, but essentially, I do not really need that many
frills. A simple, no-nonsense room can be just as inviting to me. I usually
put any lace doilies or tabletop displays in a big drawer early on.
What else sets apart a great hotel from a decent one?
I like breakfast rooms which have corners and recesses, especially when
the room is large. The most important thing is the personal rapport the
staff have with me: that they are empathetic to my situation and treat me
as an individual. On the other hand, there is the ‘obtrusiveness trap’: too
much attention can be just as bad as being ignored.
But there are also people, who want exactly that: a maximum of care
and attention.
That is true, it is a fine balancing act. But if you work in a first class
hotel, the trick is to develop an accurate sense of what a guest wants. That
also includes showing me the hotel’s back entrance, where there will not
be twenty photographers waiting for me.
When it comes to hotels, are you happy to experiment, or do you
prefer going back to the same ones?
If I am happy with the service, I like being a loyal guest. I also prefer
dealing with the staff I have got to know, but you cannot really insist on
that.
When you travel privately, do you spoil yourself and take full advantage
of the luxurious facilities?
Yes, that has happened occasionally. I do pay attention to whether there
is a nice spa, and to what the restaurant and the bar are like.
Do you also recommend hotels to your friends?
Yes, I like doing that. After starring in the ‘Commissario Brunetti’ films,
I had a reputation as the ultimate expert on Venice, but paradoxically, I
had always stayed in a flat there and was in no position to make any
recommendations for hotels – but I was able to recommend restaurants.
Are you a spontaneous traveller, or do you like to plan well in advance?
In the past, I have quite frequently just set off, especially when travelling
by bicycle. I would set a specific time, say 5pm, and then start looking
for a place to spend the night.
Did that work out alright?
Not always, no. I discovered quite a few interesting places but some of
them turned out to be real catastrophes.
Are there any dream destinations you would still like to travel to?
There are not all that many left, but I would love to go back to the Arctic.
I shot a film there 15 years ago, and that experience has stayed with me.
So who picks the destinations for private trips in the Król family?
Well, I’m not very particular about where we go. If I am not immediately
sold on an idea, my curiosity usually gets the better of me, and I
think to myself: “OK, let’s check out what you’ve picked.”
