Visible from a great distance, this castle towers over the district
of Altwildungen. Built in the 13th century as a gothic castle, the
structure underwent extensive modifications in the 17th century to
take on a baroque French style. In the place where the princes of
Waldeck-Wildungen once resided, visitors can now admire exhibits
on Hessian military and hunting history from the 16th to the 19th
century. A particular highlight is the so-called “Türkenbeute” – loot
taken from the Turks during the battles of Belgrade and Vienna in
the 17th century. In addition to this, visitors are captivated by
historical weapons, uniforms, medals and paintings. Hunting
implements and weapons provide a deep insight into the royal
hunt. You can also get some refreshments at the castle’s caférestaurant.

Getting there: If you are travelling to Bad Wildungen from
the direction of Wabern (Kassel district), the journey will
take two hours with a regional train (Regionalbahn). Passengers
travelling from the direction of Frankfurt (Main)/
Gießen/Marburg (Lahn) and Kassel can change trains in
Wabern (Kassel district). From the station, continue along
Bahnhofstraße and turn right into Rörigstraße. Follow this
road and the onto Hohlweg and then turn left into Schlossstraße.
This takes approximately 20 minutes on foot.
