Burg Eppstein
Although partly ruined, this typical spur castle towers over
Eppstein. Built as an imperial castle in the 10th century, it was
first mentioned in documents in 1122. According to legend, the
knight Eppo had the castle built on the spot where he had freed
the beautiful Berta von Bremthal from the hands of a giant. And,
even today, this former seat of the Lords of Eppstein remains
impressive. From the western gate, you can get to the outer
ward where you will discover the inner ward, the keep, the great
hall with bower, the trenches and the so-called “Bettelbub”, a
flanking tower with a dungeon. The partly-preserved east section
houses the museum for the town and the castle.

Getting there: From the direction of Offenbach/Frankfurt
(Main) and Niedernhausen (Taunus), you can get to
Eppstein by taking the S-Bahn line S2, which runs every
half hour (or almost every hour on Sundays and public
holidays). From the direction of Limburg (Lahn), you can
change trains in Niedernhausen. From the station, turn
right onto the bridge that leads directly onto Burgstraße.
Turn right at the T-junction. In front of the old town hall walk
left to the castle. This takes approximately 5 minutes on foot.
