Burg Friedberg (Friedberg Castle)
Built after 1170 under the Staufer Emperor Frederick I.
Barbarossa as an imperial castle, the walls of Burg Friedberg
encompass an area of 39,000 square metres. This makes it
one of the biggest castle complexes in Germany. Within the
fortress walls a small autonomous town arose, including the
castle itself, castle garden, church, chancellery, guard house,
armoury and school. The chief landmark of Friedberg and the
castle is the Adolfsturm (Adolf’s Tower), a castle keep more
than 50 metres in height dating from the 14th century.

Castle gardens: April–Oct. 9 a.m.–8 p.m.,
Nov.–Mar. 9 a.m.–4.30 p.m., (closed on Mondays)

Getting there: You can get to Friedberg (Hesse) by
taking the regional express (Regional-Express) from
Giessen or from Frankfurt am Main (services operate
every half hour) or on the S-Bahn line S6. From the station,
take an FB-09 or FB-10 bus to Bad Nauheim or an
FB-16 to Usingen or Ziegenberg, leaving at Burg Friedberg.
You will be able to see the castle from here. It takes
about 15 minutes from the station on foot.
