Junker-Hansen-Turm (tower) in Neustadt (Marburg district)
Between 1480 and 1484, the Junker-Hansen-Turm was
constructed as part of the renewed fortification of the castle
buildings. The master builder was Jakob von Ettlingen, who
constructed this defence tower on the south-west corner of the
town‘s fortifications on behalf of the Hessian Housemaster and
the then Pfandherr (lien administrator) of Neustadt, Hans von
Dörnberg. At a height of almost 50 m and with a diameter of
12.60 m, it is the largest half-timbered rotunda in the world.
Its sandstone walls in the basement, which are up to 4.50 m
thick, and the impressive wooden design of the half-timbered
storeys make this tower an outstanding example of medieval
fortress construction.

Getting there: When travelling from the direction of
Frankfurt and Gießen, the Regional-Express service travels
to Neustadt every hour. From Kassel, the Regional-Express
travels to Neustadt every two hours and, from Treysa, it
travels every hour. A short walk leads you through Bahnhofsstraße.
